ヴィクトリア女王即位50周年記念は、1837年6月20日のヴィクトリア女王即位50周年を記念して、1887年6月20日と21日に行われた。ウェストミンスター寺院での感謝祭と、50人のヨーロッパの王と王子を招いた晩餐会で祝われた。 [1]

最初の公式な建国50周年記念の祝典はインド帝国で行われ、夏の暑さを避けるため2月に始まった。2月16日の記念祭にはインド全土で行事が行われ、総督のリットン卿が指揮を執ったが、この行事をイギリス統治の成功と結び付けようとする彼の試みは、地元の統治者によってほとんど無視された。[6]ボンベイ(現在のムンバイ)のダーバーにはコンノート公爵アーサー王子が出席した。さらに、ヴィクトリア女王はイギリス領インド軍の騎兵隊をロンドンに派遣して個人的な護衛を務めさせ、[7] 2人のインド人イスラム教徒をウェイターとして雇い、そのうちの1人がアブドゥル・カリムであった。[a]記念祭への招待状はインド藩王国の統治者に送られ、そのうちの何人かはロンドンまでの長旅をいとわなかった。[8]

- ^ a b Karim was soon promoted to Munshi and taught her Urdu, and acted as a clerk.[22] Her family and retainers were appalled, and accused Abdul Karim of spying for the Muslim Patriotic League, and biasing the Queen against the Hindus.[23] Equerry Frederick Ponsonby (the son of Sir Henry) discovered that the Munshi had lied about his background, and reported to Lord Elgin, Viceroy of India, "the Munshi occupies very much the same position as John Brown used to do."[24] Victoria dismissed their complaints as racial prejudice.[25] Abdul Karim remained in her service until he returned to India with a pension on her death.[26]
