
ホワイト・スター・ラインのオリンピック級定期船の2隻目であるRMSタイタニック号の処女航海には、イギリスのサウサンプトンからニューヨーク市まで合計2,240人が乗船した。[1]航海の途中、1912年4月15日の早朝に船は氷山に衝突して沈没し、1,517人の乗客と乗組員が死亡した。[2] [3]
船の乗客は、チケットの価格によって3つの階級に分けられた。1等船客は、上流階級の著名人、実業家、政治家、高級軍人、実業家、銀行家、芸能人、社交界の名士、プロのスポーツ選手など、船上で最も裕福な乗客がほとんどであった。2等船客は主に中流階級の旅行者で、教授、作家、聖職者、観光客が含まれていた。3等船客または三等船室の乗客は、主に米国やカナダに移住する移民であった。[4]
ファーストクラス

タイタニック号のファーストクラスの乗客名簿には、1912年の著名な上流階級の「名士名簿」が載っていた。パーラースイートと小さなプライベートプロムナードデッキ付きのファーストクラスのシングルベッドの料金は30ポンド(2023年の3,800ポンドに相当)から870ポンド(2023年の109,000ポンドに相当)であった。[5] [6]ファーストクラスの乗客は、ジム、スカッシュコート、海水プール、電気式およびビクトリア様式のトルコ式風呂、理髪店、ファーストクラスの犬用の犬小屋、エレベーター、屋外および屋内のプロムナードなど、数多くのアメニティを楽しんだ。 [7]ファーストクラスの乗客は、係員、メイド、子供用の看護師や家庭教師、運転手、料理人などの個人スタッフも同行して旅行した。 [8]

多くの英国貴族がこの航海に参加した。第19代ローセス伯爵の妻であるローセス伯爵夫人は、両親のトーマスとクレメンティーナ・ダイアー・エドワーズ、従妹のグラディス・チェリーとともにサウサンプトンで乗船した。不動産投資家で裕福なスコットランド系アメリカ人のグレーシー家の一員であるアーチボルド・グレーシー4世大佐もサウサンプトンで乗船した。ロンドンのキャベンディッシュ夫妻も、他の著名な英国人カップルの1人であった。ハーランド・アンド・ウルフの会長であるピリー卿はタイタニック号に乗船する予定だったが、病気のため不運な航海には参加できなかった。しかし、ホワイト・スター・ラインのマネージング・ディレクターのジェイ・ブルース・イスメイとハーランド・アンド・ウルフの設計者であるトーマス・アンドリュースの2人が、処女航海の船の進捗状況を監視するために乗船した。[9]
この旅には、アメリカの社交界エリートの中でも特に著名なメンバーが参加していた。47歳の不動産建設者、実業家、億万長者のジョン・ジェイコブ・アスター4世大佐と18歳の妊娠中の妻マデレーンは、子供の出産のためにアメリカに戻る途中だった。アスターは船上で最も裕福な乗客であり、世界でも有数の富豪だった。彼の曽祖父のジョン・ジェイコブ・アスターは、北米初の億万長者だった。その他にも、実業家で億万長者のベンジャミン・グッゲンハイム、メイシーズ百貨店のオーナーで元米国下院議員のイジドール・ストラウスとその妻アイダ、ヤングスタウン・シート・アンド・チューブ・カンパニーの創設者で社長のジョージ・デニック・ウィック、億万長者の路面電車王ジョージ・ダントン・ワイドナー、ペンシルバニア鉄道副社長のジョン・B・セイヤーとその妻マリアンなどがいた。この船には、カナダのグランド・トランク鉄道社長チャールズ・ヘイズ、ウィリアム・アーネスト・カーターと妻でアメリカの社交界の名士ルシール・カーター、大富豪で慈善家、女性の権利活動家マーガレット・ブラウン、テニス選手で銀行家のカール・ベア、有名なアメリカの無声映画女優ドロシー・ギブソン、著名なバッファローの建築家エドワード・オースティン・ケント、そして6週間のヨーロッパ旅行から職務に復帰しようとしていたウィリアム・ハワード・タフト大統領の軍事補佐官アーチボルド・バット少佐が乗っていた。スウェーデン人の一等客で実業家のマウリッツ・ホーカン・ビョルンストローム=ステファンソンは、船上で最も価値の高い単一の品物を所有していた。それはフランスの新古典主義絵画の傑作『La Circassienne au Bain』で、彼は後にこれに対して10万ドル(2023年の価値で310万ドルに相当)の賠償金を請求することになる。[10]
ハーシーズチョコレートの創業者ミルトン・S・ハーシー[11]は、この船の処女航海に乗船する予定だったが、出航前に予約をキャンセルした。[12] JPモルガンもこの航海を計画していたが、土壇場で計画を変更したと報じられている。[13]
2等

二等船客は、レジャー観光客、学者、聖職者、中流階級のイギリス人、スコットランド人、アメリカ人の家族だった。船の音楽家たちは二等船室に宿泊した。彼らは乗組員としてカウントされず、ホワイト・スター・ラインと契約している代理店に雇われていた。二等船客の大人一人当たりの平均チケット価格は13ポンド(2023年では1,600ポンドに相当)だった。[14]そして、これらの乗客の多くにとって、タイタニック号での旅行体験は、より小さな定期船のファーストクラスでの旅行に似ていた。二等船客には専用の図書室があり、男性は専用の喫煙室を利用できた。二等船客の子供たちは、図書室にある子供向けの本を読んだり、二等船室の遊歩道でデッキ・クォイトやシャッフルボードで遊んだりすることができた。[7] 12歳のルース・ベッカーは、ホワイト・スター・ラインが用意したベビーカーに2歳の弟リチャードを押して囲いのある遊歩道を歩き回って時間を過ごしていた。[15]

乗船していた二人のローマカトリックの司祭、トーマス・バイルズ神父とジョセフ・ペルシッツ神父は、航海中毎日二等船客と三等船客のためにミサを執り行いました。バイルズ神父は英語、アイルランド語、フランス語で説教し、ペルシッツ神父はドイツ語とハンガリー語で説教しました。[16] [17]バイルズ神父は沈没中に亡くなったと伝えられており、閉じ込められた人々のために祝福と最後の儀式を行っていました。[18]
船上では、リトアニア人の司祭、ユオザス・モンヴィラ神父も沈没中に亡くなった。[19]
スコットランド出身の有名なバプテスト派牧師ジョン・ハーパー牧師は、シカゴのムーディー教会で説教するために娘と妹とともにアメリカへ旅行していました。[20]
ダリッジ・カレッジの理科の教師ローレンス・ビーズリーは、船上の図書館で多くの時間を過ごしました。沈没から2か月後、彼は惨事の最初の目撃証言である『SSタイタニック号の沈没』を執筆し出版しました。 [21]
ラロッシュ家、父ジョセフと娘シモンヌとルイーズは、この船に乗っていた唯一の黒人の乗客として知られている。彼らは、ジョセフの妊娠中の妻ジュリエットとともに、ジョセフの故郷であるハイチ島へ向かっていた。ジョセフは、パリの旧居から叔父のシンシナトゥス・ルコントが大統領を務めていたハイチへ戻ることで、家族を人種差別から遠ざけることができると期待していた。[22]
2等船室にいたもう一つのフランス人家族は、ホフマンという偽名を使っていたナブラティル一家だった。スロバキア生まれのフランス人仕立て屋、ミシェル・ナブラティルは、疎遠になっていた妻から幼い2人の息子、ミシェル・ジュニアとエドモンドを誘拐し、チャールズ・ホフマンという名前を名乗り、 [23]サウサンプトンで船に乗り込み、子供たちを米国に連れて行こうとした。ミシェル・シニアは沈没で亡くなり、母親か他の親族がフランス人の幼児を特定できるかもしれないという希望から、少年たちの写真が世界中に出回った。この子供たちは「タイタニックの孤児」として知られるようになった。 [24]ニューヨークに到着した後、子供たちはタイタニック号の生存者マーガレット・ヘイズによって世話され、母親のマルセル・ナブラティルがフランスのニースから子供たちを引き取った。 [25] 2等船室の最後の生存者はバーバラ・ウェストだった。彼女は沈没当時10ヶ月で、2007年に96歳で亡くなった。[26]
3等

三等船客や三等船室の乗客は、アメリカやカナダで新しい生活を始めることを望みながら出発した。三等船客は、出身地に応じて7ポンド(2023年の900ポンドに相当)のチケットを支払った。チケットの料金には、出発港3か所までの鉄道料金が含まれていることが多かった。子供のチケットは3ポンド(2023年の400ポンドに相当)だった。[6]
三等船客は、国籍も民族も多種多様だった。イギリス、アイルランド、スカンジナビアからの移民が多数いたほか、中央・東ヨーロッパ、レバント(シリア)、香港からの乗客もいた。[27]中には一人で旅行する人や、小さな家族グループで旅行する人もいた。ルフェーブル家、ポールソン家、パヌラス家など、母親のグループが幼い子供を連れて一人で旅行していた。大半の乗客は、すでにアメリカに職を求めて出かけ、十分なお金を貯めて家族を呼び寄せることになった夫たちと合流する予定だった。[8]


3等船室のもっと大きな家族の中には、フロリダ州ジャクソンビルに4歳から20歳までの9人の子供たちを連れて移住していたジョンとアニー・セージ夫妻、カナダへ向かうスウェーデン出身のアンダースとアルフリーダ・アンダーソン夫妻とその5人の子供たち、そしてアルフリーダの妹アンナ、夫エルンスト、赤ん坊のギルバート、そしてニューヨークの発電所での新しい仕事のために6人の子供たちを連れて引っ越していたフレデリックとオーガスタ・グッドウィン夫妻がいた。2007年、科学者はDNA分析を行い、CSマッケイ・ベネットによって最初に収容された犠牲者の一人である小さな金髪の幼児の遺体がフレデリックとオーガスタの末っ子である19か月のシドニーであると特定した。[28]セージ夫妻、アンダーソン夫妻、グッドウィン夫妻は全員沈没で亡くなった。
船上で最年少の乗客で、両親のバートラム・シニアとエヴァ・ディーン、兄のバートラムとともにイギリスからカンザス州に移住していた生後2か月のミルヴィナ・ディーンは2009年に亡くなった。彼女はタイタニック号の惨事で亡くなった最後の生存者となった。 [29]


ライバルの船会社キュナードに対抗するため、ホワイト・スター・ライン社は三等船の乗客にささやかな贅沢を提供し、移民たちが故郷の親戚に手紙を書いてホワイト・スター・ライン社の船で旅をするよう勧めてくれることを期待した。三等船の乗客には専用のダイニング施設があり、ベンチの代わりに椅子が置かれ、三等船室の厨房スタッフが食事を用意した。他の定期船では、三等船の乗客は自分の食べ物を持参するよう求められていた。 [30]寮式の寝室ではなく、三等船の乗客には専用の客室があった。独身の男女は別々で、女性は船尾の2~6人用客室、男性は船首の最大10人用客室に寝泊まりし、見知らぬ人と共有することが多かった。各客室には木製パネルとマットレス付きのベッド、毛布、枕、電灯、暖房、流水洗面台が備え付けられていたが、船首客室には専用の洗面台がなかった。公衆浴場も2つあり、1つは男性用、もう1つは女性用であった。[31]
乗客は三等船室に集まり、チェスやトランプをしたり、船尾甲板を歩いたりした。三等船室の子供たちは船室で遊んだり、船内を探検したりした。9歳のフランク・ゴールドスミスは、エンジンルームを覗いたり、船尾甲板の荷物用クレーンに登ったりしたことを思い出した。[32]
船の規則では、三等船客は船内の自分のエリアに留まるよう定められていた。タイタニック号には、三等船客が混ざらないように格子が取り付けられており、このゲートは通常は閉じられていたが、緊急時にはスチュワードが開けることができた。衝突後の慌ただしさの中で、スチュワードは眠っている乗客を起こしたり、女性や子供のグループをボートデッキに誘導したりするのに忙しく、ゲートを全部開ける時間がなかったため、混乱した三等船客の多くがデッキの下に閉じ込められた。[33]
出航しなかったチケット所有者
当時の著名人や著名人で、西行きの乗船券を持っていた人や、乗船券を持っている人の客だった人は、出航しなかった。他の人々は、タイタニックの処女航海の第2区間で、イギリスのプリマスに戻る乗船券を得るためにニューヨークで待っていた。西行きのものであろうと、東行きの帰路のものであろうと、現存する未使用の乗船券の多くは、タイタニック関連の遺物として非常に貴重なものとなっている。乗船券を持っていたものの、実際には出航しなかった人には、セオドア・ドライサー、ヘンリー・クレイ・フリック、ミルトン・S・ハーシー、グリエルモ・マルコーニ、ジョン・ピアポント・モーガン、ジョン・モット、ジョージ・ワシントン・ヴァンダービルト2世、エドガー・セルウィンがいる。[34] [35]ジョン・コンウェイの2022年の演劇「ローレルとチャップリン:有名になる前」(後に「ローレルとチャップリン:確執」に改題)では、チャーリー・チャップリンとスタン・ローレルの両者が1912年の北米ツアーでタイタニック号に乗ることを要請したが、ボスである劇場興行主のフレッド・カーノがチケット価格が高すぎるという理由で拒否したとされている。
民族別の乗客
中国人乗客
乗客名簿には、出身国が中国で、出身地が香港、目的地がニューヨークとなっている乗客8名が記載されている。このうち6名が惨事を生き延びた。[36]彼らは中国人排斥法により米国への入国を認められなかった。[37]タイタニック号惨事の中国人生存者の1人はファン・ラン(1894年6月21日 - 1986年1月21日、別名フォン・ウィン・サン)で、海上に取り残された生存者の捜索のため救命ボート14号で戻った後、5等航海士ハロルド・ロウが海から救出した4人の乗客のうちの1人だった。[38]ファンは米国に定住し、生存者の1人リー・ビンはカナダに移住してオンタリオ州ゴールトに住み、ホワイト・ローズ・カフェ、その後トロントで働いたが、中国へ出発して行方不明になった。 1世紀以上忘れ去られていた中国人生存者の物語は、研究者と番組プロデューサーが協力してタイタニック号沈没後の中国人生存者の所在と生活を解明し、2021年のドキュメンタリー映画「ザ・シックス」で紹介されました。[39] [40]
オスマン帝国の乗客
オスマン帝国出身の乗客は80人以上おり、トルコ人、アルメニア人、レバント人が含まれていた。[41] [42] [43]当時、多くの人がオスマン帝国の身分証明書を所持しており、そこにはパレスチナ、ヨルダン、レバノン、シリアを含むシリア地域[注1]出身である旨が記載されていた。[8]
レバノンのハーディン市長バホス・アサフによると、93人の乗客は現在のレバノン出身で、そのうち20人はハーディン出身で、レバノンのどの地域よりも多かった。ハーディンの乗客のうち、11人の成人男性が死亡し、8人の女性と子供、1人の成人男性が生き残った。[44]レバノンの出版物デイリースターの記事で引用されたカマル・セイカリ氏は、ベイルート・アメリカン大学に保管されている1912年5月16日発行のアル・ハワテル誌によると、乗船していた125人のレバノン人のうち23人が生き残ったと述べた。同誌は、クファル・メシュキ出身の10人がタイタニック号で死亡したと述べている。[45]作家のジュディス・ゲラーによると、「公式にはタイタニック号には154人のシリア人が乗船しており、29人が救出された。男性4人、子供5人、女性20人」である。[46] [8]
1997年、パレスチナ系アメリカ人ジャーナリストのレイ・ハナニアは映画「タイタニック」(1997年)を観て、背景の登場人物がアラビア語で「急げ」を意味する「ヤッラ」と言っているのに気づいた。これがきっかけで彼はこの問題を調べたところ、アラブ人の乗客が乗船していたことを発見した。[46] 1998年、彼はタイタニック号のアラブ人についてのコラム「タイタニック:痛みは分かち合うが栄光は分かち合わない」を執筆した。ハナニアの分析によると、79人のアラブ人乗客が船に乗っていたが、どの乗客がアラブ人であるかを「正確に特定する」ことは難しい。[46]ハナニアは、その多くがキリスト教徒である理由として、教会の後援によりキリスト教徒はイスラム教徒よりも船旅が容易であり、またキリスト教徒はオスマン帝国の迫害により移住する可能性が高かったためであると述べた。[46]レイラ・サロウム・エリアスは、沈没当時のアラビア語の新聞から大量の調査資料を引用し、船に乗っていたシリア人乗客とアルメニア人乗客の生活について詳細な調査を行い、多くのシリア人乗客の名前と状況を明らかにした。シリア人生存者によると、シリア人乗客の総数は145人から165人で、そのうち2等乗客として乗船したのは1組のカップルのみだった。サロウムの乗客数は、沈没当時の情報源に基づいており、名前は明らかにされ、彼らの本当の本物のアラビア語の名前、家族、出身村、町、都市に基づいて与えられている。[47]
ユダヤ人の乗客
タイタニック号には少なくとも69人のユダヤ人乗客がいたが、実際の数はそれよりも多いと思われる。確認されている69人のうち、39人が沈没時に死亡した。少なくとも2人の乗組員もユダヤ人であった。理髪師のハーバート・クラインと「ヘブライ人料理人」のチャールズ・ケネルであるが、どちらも沈没を生き延びなかった。[48]
ユダヤ人の乗客はすべてのクラスにおり、ポーランド、イギリス、アメリカ、ロシア帝国などさまざまな国籍の人がいた。著名なユダヤ人の乗客には、 2等車のエヴァ・ハートとその両親のエステルとベンジャミン、メイシーズ創業者のイダとイジドール・ストラウスとその妻、当時世界で最も裕福な男性の一人であったベンジャミン・グッゲンハイム、ジャーナリストのエディス・ローゼンバウムがいる。しかし、ほとんどのユダヤ人の乗客は3等車に乗っており、その大部分はアメリカへの移民であった。[49] [50]
生存者と犠牲者
1912年4月14日の夜、午後11時40分頃、タイタニック号はニューファンドランド島のグランドバンクスから南に約400マイル(640 km)の海域を航行中、氷山に衝突して沈み始めた。真夜中直前、エドワード・スミス船長は船の救命ボートを準備するよう命じ、遭難信号を発信した。最も近くで応答した船は58マイル(93 km)離れたキュナード・ラインのカルパシア号で、到着まで推定4時間かかったが、タイタニック号の乗客全員を救出するには遅すぎた。船が氷山に衝突してから45分後、スミス船長は「女性と子供を優先」という命令の下、救命ボートに乗客を乗せ降ろすよう命じた。[51]



最初に進水した救命ボートは右舷の救命ボート7号で、定員65名のうち28名が乗船していた。英国調査委員会の推定では、このボートは午前12時45分頃に降ろされた。[52]折り畳み式ボートDは、1時55分に進水した最後の救命ボートだった。さらに2隻の折り畳み式ボートAとBが士官邸の屋根から移動中だったが、適切に進水させることができなかった。折り畳み式ボートBは逆さまになって船から漂い、折り畳み式ボートAは士官宿舎の屋根から落ちた際に帆布の側面の支えが壊れ、半分水に浸かった。[52]救命ボートのいくつかでは、水中の人々を救助するために戻ることについて議論が起こったが、多くの生存者は、救命ボートに乗り込もうとする人々に飲み込まれるか、沈没するタイタニック号の吸引力で引きずり下ろされることを恐れていた。しかし、実際には吸引力はほとんどなかったことが判明した。[53]午前2時20分、タイタニック号自体は沈没した。[54]少数の乗客と乗組員は、進水していない2隻の折りたたみ式ボートまでたどり着き、数時間生き延びた(何人かはまだひっくり返った折りたたみ式ボートBにしがみついていた)。その後、5等航海士ハロルド・ロウに救助された。[55]

午前4時10分、カルパチア号は沈没現場に到着し、生存者の救助を開始した。午前8時30分までに、生存者を乗せた最後の救命ボートを拾い上げ、午前8時50分にニューヨーク市のピア54に向けてその地域を出発した。カルパチア号に救助された711人の乗客と乗組員のうち、一等船客のウィリアム・F・ホイトを含む6人が夜間に救命ボートで死亡するか、翌朝カルパチア号の船上で死亡し、海に埋葬された。[57]
沈没から数日後、数隻の船が犠牲者の遺体を収容するために被災地へ向かった。ホワイト・スター・ラインは、遺体を収容するためにノバスコシア州ハリファックスからケーブル船マッケイ・ベネット号をチャーターした。他の3隻の船、ケーブル船ミニア号、灯台補給船モンマグニー号、封印船アルジェリン号も捜索に続いた。各船は防腐処理用品、葬儀屋、聖職者を乗せて出発した。マッケイ・ベネット号が収容した遺体には回収時に番号が付けられ、身元確認に役立つよう可能な限り詳細な説明が付けられた。身長、体重、年齢、髪と目の色、目に見えるあざ、傷跡、入れ墨など、遺体の外見が記録され、遺体に付いていた私物は集められ、番号に対応する小さなキャンバス地の袋に入れられた。[58]

船は306体という大量の遺体を発見したため、船内の防腐処理用品はすぐに底をついた。衛生規則により、防腐処理された遺体のみ港に戻すことができた。[59]マカイ・ベネット号のランダー船長と葬儀屋は、大地所をめぐる争いを解決するために裕福な男性を目視で特定する必要があったため、一等船客の遺体はすべて保存することにした。その結果、海上で埋葬された116体のうち大半は三等船客と乗組員であった(身元が判明したのは56体のみ)。ランダー自身は、船員として海上で埋葬されることを予想していたと主張した。[60]しかし、遺族や葬儀屋から海上での埋葬に対する苦情が出された。ミニア号などの後の船では遺体の発見数が少なくなり、防腐処理用品も少なくて済み、海上での埋葬は保存できないほど損傷した遺体に限定することができた。[要出典]
回収された190体の遺体は保存され、鉄道と蒸気船で直結しており、沈没現場に最も近い都市であるノバスコシア州ハリファックスに運ばれた。カーリングリンクに大きな仮設遺体安置所が設置され、カナダ東部全域から葬儀屋が協力に呼ばれた。北米全土から親族が遺体の身元確認と引き取りに訪れた。遺体の中には、北米やヨーロッパ各地の故郷に埋葬するために輸送された遺体もあった。身元が判明したのは遺体の約3分の2。引き取り手のない残りの150体の遺体のうち、121体[61]は無宗派のフェアビュー・ローン墓地に、19体[62]はローマカトリックのマウント・オリヴェット墓地に、10体[63]はユダヤ教の バロン・デ・ヒルシュ墓地に運ばれた。[64]身元不明の犠牲者は、遺体が発見された順番に単純な番号が振られて埋葬された。[要出典]
1912年5月中旬、沈没現場から200マイル(320キロ)以上離れた場所で、RMS オーシャニックが331、332、333の3体の遺体を発見した。彼らは沈没の最後の瞬間に水没したコラプシブルAの元の乗客だった。数人がこの救命ボートにたどり着いたが、3人が夜間に死亡した。沈没後、5等航海士ハロルド・ロウと6人の乗組員が空の救命ボートで現場に戻り、生存者を救助したが、コラプシブルAから生き残った乗客を救助したが、3人の遺体はボートの中に残された。1等乗客のトムソン・ビーティーと2人の乗組員、消防士、水兵である。オセアニックがコラプシブルAから遺体を回収した後、遺体は海に埋葬された。[65] [66]

Buried in a small plot in a Halifax cemetery, the baby was a poignant symbol of the children who perished on the vessel when it sank in 1912. In 2002, the mystery seemingly was solved; Canadian researchers said he was a 13-month-old Finnish boy. However, on Tuesday, a lead researcher said the child was actually the 19-month-old boy from England.
