The English modal auxiliary verbs are a subset of the English auxiliary verbs used mostly to express modality, properties such as possibility and obligation.[a] They can most easily be distinguished from other verbs by their defectiveness (they do not have participles or plain forms[b]) and by their lack of the ending ‑(e)s for the third-person singular.[3]
The central English modal auxiliary verbs are can (with could), may (with might), shall (with should), will (with would), and must. A few other verbs are usually also classed as modals: ought, and (in certain uses) dare, and need. Use (/jus/, rhyming with "goose") is included as well. Other expressions, notably had better, share some of their characteristics.
A list of what tend to be regarded as modal auxiliary verbs in Modern English, along with their inflected forms, is shown in the following table.
Contractions are shown only if their orthography is distinctive. There are also unstressed versions that are typically, although not necessarily, written in the standard way.[4] Where there is a blank, the modal auxiliary verb lacks this form. (A corresponding lexical verb may have the form. For example, although the lexical verb need has a preterite form, the modal auxiliary verb need does not.)
Descriptive grammars of English differ slightly on the criteria they set for modal auxiliary verbs. According to The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language, the criteria are as follows.
Modal auxiliary verbs are a subset of auxiliary verbs and thus meet the criteria for these. For lists of those criteria, see the article English auxiliary verbs, but among them are that the verbs (i) can invert with their subjects (notably in questions, Must I go?), (ii) can be negated with not (I must not go; Must I not go?),[8] and (iii) have negative inflected forms (won't, wouldn't).[9]
To illustrate untensed forms, those of the irregular lexical verb take and the non-modal auxiliary verb be are the plain take and be (as in Take it!, I didn't take it, and Don't be silly), the gerund-participles taking and being, and the past participles taken and been.[10]
Modal auxiliary verbs lack untensed forms. Attempting to use them brings ungrammatical results:
Compare the grammaticality of non-modal auxiliary verb be in I will be able to drive, being able to drive, and I have been able to drive.
This refers to agreement of a verb (in present tense) with its third-person singular subject:
Compare lexical verb try in She tries/*try, and non-modal auxiliary verb do in She does/*do try.
doは法助動詞ではないが、1 個の不定詞節をとります ( Did you move the piano? ) 。 help は、1 個の不定詞節をとることができる動詞です ( I helped move the piano )。
アポドーシスとは、条件文の「ならば」の部分のことです。(「もし」の部分はプロタシスです。)ここで「遠い」とは、「話し手が起こりそうもないと考える」または「話し手が真実ではないと知っている」という意味です。
* If I were an elephant, I ate more applesの語彙動詞eatと* If I were an elephant, I was able to eat more applesの非法助動詞beを比較してください。
Must は少数の話し手に対してのみこの条件を満たし、had betterも同様に満たすかどうかは疑問である。[ 12 ]
ケンブリッジ文法はmayについて次のように述べている。
ここで、一部の話者にとってmayとmight はもはや単一の語彙素の屈折形ではなく、 mayとmightという別々の語彙素に属するほどに分岐したという証拠がある。それぞれの語彙素はmustと同様に過去形を持たない。[ 5 ]
使用済みではこの条件を満たさない。[ 7 ]
If similarly intended (as a doubtful or incredulous contemplation of an option for the future), attempts at this with a lexical or non-modal auxiliary verb are ungrammatical: *I drove there, I suppose; *I was going to drive there, I suppose.
Other than when used for backshift, should has diverged in meaning so far from shall as to be usable here only with difficulty. As they lack preterite forms, must, ought and need cannot be used in this way, and so that criterion does not apply to them.[13] And used describes the past, not the present or future.
The following verbs, shown in present–preterite pairs, satisfy or come close to satisfying all of the above criteria and can be classed as the central modal verbs of English:
Even for lexical verbs, preterite forms have uses besides referring to the past, but for modal auxiliary verbs, such uses are particularly important: (Could you pass me the sauce?; Without my phone I might easily be lost; You should work harder; I would avoid that street).
Ought, dare, need, and used satisfy some of the criteria above, and are more (ought, dare, need) or less (used) often categorized as modal verbs.[14][15]Had better is sometimes called a modal idiom.
Other English auxiliary verbs appear in a variety of different forms and are not regarded as modal verbs:
最近の5つの学術的な動詞の説明は、法助動詞の範囲、つまりどの動詞が法助動詞であるかという点で互いに意見が異なっている。
can ( with could )、may (with might )、must、shall (with should )、will (with would ) は、「中心的な法助動詞」( A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language、1985 年) [ 17 ] 、 「二次的または法助動詞」( F. R. Palmer、1988 年) [ 18 ]、 「法助動詞」(Anthony R. Warner、1993 年) [ 19 ]、「法助動詞クラスの中心的なメンバー」( The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language、2002 年) [ 20 ]、または「コア法助動詞」(Bas Aarts、2014 年) [ 21 ]である、またはそれらに含まれることに同意している。
would rather 、would sooner、would as soon の wouldとhad better、had best、had rather の haveについては、The Cambridge Grammarだけが 6 個すべてを指摘していますが、他の 4 つの助動詞の説明ではそれぞれ 3 つ以上を指摘しています。 [ 32 ]
『総合文法』では、have got ( I 've got to go now ) とbe to ( You are to hand over the cash )の両方を助動詞の慣用句と呼んでいます。 [ 30 ]他のどの説明もこれに同意していません。[ 33 ] [ 34 ] [ 35 ] [ 36 ]
Palmer calls be bound/able/going/willing to and have (got) to semi-modals.[37]A Comprehensive Grammar calls be able/about/apt/
The modals can and could are from Old Englishcan(n) and cuþ, which were respectively the present and preterite forms of the verb cunnan ("be able"). The silent l in the spelling of could results from analogy with would and should.
Similarly, may and might are from Old English mæg and meahte, respectively the present and preterite forms of magan ("may, to be able"); shall and should are from sceal and sceolde, respectively the present and preterite forms of sculan ("owe, be obliged"); and will and would are from wille and wolde, respectively the present and preterite forms of willan ("wish, want").
The aforementioned Old English verbs cunnan, magan, sculan, and willan followed the preterite-present paradigm (or, in the case of willan, a similar but irregular paradigm), which explains the absence of the ending -s in the third-person present forms can, may, shall, and will. (The original Old English forms given above were first- and third-person singular forms; their descendant forms have become generalized to all persons and numbers.)
I could swimはI can swimの過去形として使用できます。
この「過去における未来」(過去展望とも呼ばれる)のwouldの使い方は、主節でも使用できます。例:私は1930年にグリーン・ゲーブルズに引っ越しました。私はその後10年間そこに住みました。
In many cases, in order to give modals past reference, they are used together with the auxiliary have and a past participle, as in I should have asked her; You may have seen me. Sometimes these expressions are limited in meaning; for example, must have can refer only to certainty, whereas past obligation is expressed by an alternative phrase such as had to (see § Replacements for defective forms below).
All the preterite forms are used as past equivalents of the corresponding present-tense modal verbs in indirect speech and similar clauses requiring the rules of sequence of tenses to be applied. For example, if it were said in 1960 that People think that we will all be driving hovercars by the year 2000, it might now be reported that In 1960, people thought that we would all be driving hovercars by the year 2000.
The preterite forms of modals are used in the apodosis (then-clause) of counterfactual conditional sentences. The modal would (or should as a first-person alternative) is used to produce the conditional construction typically used in clauses of this type: If you loved me, you would support me. It can be replaced by could (meaning "would be able (to do something)") and might (meaning "would possibly") as appropriate.
When the clause has past reference, the construction with the modal plus have (see above) is used: If they (had) wanted to do it, they would (could/might) have done it by now. (The would have done construction is called the conditional perfect.)
The protasis (if-clause) of such a sentence typically contains the preterite form of a verb (or the past perfect construction, for past reference), without any modal. The modal could may be used here in its role of the preterite form of can (if I could speak French). However, all the modal preterites can be used in such clauses with certain types of hypothetical future reference: if I should lose or should I lose (equivalent to if I lose); if you would/might/could stop doing that (usually used as a form of request).
Sentences with the verb wish and expressions of wish using if only... follow similar patterns to the if-clauses that are referred to above when they have counterfactual present or past reference. When they express a desired event in the near future, the modal would is used: I wish you would visit me; If only he would give me a sign.
For more information see English conditional sentences.
Early Modern English often distinguished between second-person plural you (or ye) and second-person singular thou. Rather as English verbs other than modal auxiliaries agree with third-person singular subjects in today's English, Early Modern English verbs in general (modal auxiliaries included) agreed with a second-person subject that was distinctively singular. (There was no such agreement with instances of you or ye that happened to have singular reference.) Examples from Shakespeare are shown below, except for motest, attested in John Dee.
As noted above, English modal verbs are defective in that they do not have any untensed form, or, for some, preterite form. However, in many cases, expressions can carry the same meaning as the modal and be used to supply the missing forms:
The modals have strong and weak forms:[40]
shallとshould がwillとwould の一人称の代替として使われる場合、それらも弱形- llと- dを取ることがあります。
should have のような組み合わせは通常/ʃʊd(h)əv/または単に/ʃʊdə/ shouldaに短縮されます。また、ought to は/ɔːtə/ oughtaになることがあります。[ 41 ]英語の弱形と強形を参照してください。
ほとんどの助動詞には否定形があります。can't 、won'tなどです。これらは最初は弱形(縮約形)でしたが、その後屈折形へと進化しました。[ 9 ]
法助動詞を用いた構文には、2 種類の否定のうちどちらか一方、または両方が適用されることがあります。内部否定は、意味的には法助動詞の補語に適用されます。 「 He might have overheard you 」と「He might not have overheard you」(内部否定あり)の違いは、「It is possible that he overheard you」と「It is possible that he did not overheard you」の違いと同じです。[ 42 ]内部否定の場合、not は主動詞により近い位置に置かれることがあります。「He might have not overheard you 」は「He might not have overheard you」と同じ意味です。「He could have not overheard you」は「It is possible that he did not overheard you」を意味します。[ 43 ]
対照的に、外部否定は様相そのものに適用されます。He could have overheard you と He couldn't have overheard you (外部否定付き) の違いは、「It is possible that he overheard you」と「It is not possible that he overheard you」の違いと同じです。[ 42 ]
「謝る必要はない」と「謝る必要はない」を比較すると、前者は内的否定であり、謝罪の必要性を自分の立場を貫くことに変えている。後者は外的否定であり、あらゆる必要性を否定している。[ 44 ]
2種類の否定は組み合わせることができます。He ca n't have not overhirrard youは「彼があなたの会話を聞き逃したということはあり得ない」という意味です。[ 43 ]
否定が内的か外的かは、特定の動詞とそれが表す様相の強さによって部分的に決まります。ただし、次の点も考慮する必要があります。「肯定的な答えを期待する質問として使われる否定疑問文は、様相の強さに関係なく外部否定を持ちます[ ... ] 特殊なケースはタグです: We must stop soon, mustn't we?」[ 45 ]
助動詞canは、動的な意味、義務的な意味、認識論的な意味、つまり生来の能力、許容性、または確率の観点から可能性を表します。例:
過去形のcould は、上記の意味においてcanの過去形または遠近法条件形として使用されます( § 過去形を参照)。また、可能性を表すためにも使用されます。We could be in trouble here.特定の状況で可能性を表す場合は、 canよりもcould、may、mightを使用する方が望ましいです(上記の「ライバル関係」の例のように、canまたはmayが使用される一般的な場合とは異なります)。
canとcould はどちらも依頼に使用できます。[ 50 ] Can / could you pass me the cheese?は「チーズを渡してください」という意味です(could の方が丁寧です[ 51 ] )。どちらもpossibleと一緒に使用できます。Can / could you possible pass me the cheese? [ 52 ] can'tを使った依頼はせっかちに聞こえることがあります ( Can't you be quiet? ) [ 51 ] 。
「見る」「聞く」などの知覚動詞には「can」がよく使われます。例えば、「I can see a tree」のように。[ 46 ]相の区別もできます。例えば、「I could see it」(進行中の状態)と「I saw it」(出来事)のように。
could have は、過去の能力や可能性を表す表現です。例: I could have told him if I had seen him . I could have told him yesterday (but I don't).
Can have...は may have...よりもあまり一般的ではありません。
Can may be negated by the addition of not/kənˈnɒt/, analogously to the addition of not to could, may, will and so forth. It can also be negated by inflection; its commoner inflected form is can't/ˈkɑnt/, /ˈkɑnt/, or /kant/ (in RP, General American and General Australian respectively). However, it has an alternative inflected form, cannot/ˈkænɒt/. Can not and cannot thus differ in placement of the single stress. Can not is more formal than can't, and does not invert with its subject (Can't/*Cannot we leave now?).[53]
Negated, could has the inflected form couldn't.
Negating can or could is external and negates the matrix clause, expressing inability, impermissibility or impossibility (I can't wear jeans). This differs from may or might used to express possibility: It can't be true does not mean It may not be true. Thus can't (or cannot) is often used to express disbelief even in possibility, as must expresses belief in the certainty. When the reference is to the past, have is used: He can't/cannot have done it means "It is not possible that he did it" (compare He must have done it).
With special stress, internal negation is possible: I can not wear a suit, if I wish means "I am not compelled to wear a suit if I don't want to".[54]
The verb may expresses possibility in either an epistemic or deontic sense, that is, in terms of probability or permissibility. For example:
May は現在だけでなく未来にも言及できます ( He may arrive は彼が到着する可能性があるという意味です。I may go to the mallは私がモールに行くことを検討しているという意味です)。
過去形のmightは、 mayの同義語として、起こりうる状況を表すのに使われます (can couldと同様です。上記参照)。mightとcouldはmayよりも疑念を表すことが多いと言われることもあります。条件文におけるmightの使い方、および間接話法などの文脈でmayの過去形として使われる場合については、上記の§過去形を参照してください。
May (またはmight ) は、些細な点について譲歩を表すこともあります。「He may be taller than me, but he's certainly not strong」は、「確かに彼は私より背が高いが、それは重要ではない。なぜなら、彼は私より背が高いわけではないからだ」という意味になります。
May は現在または将来の行動に対する許可を示す場合もあれば、丁寧な指示として使われる場合もあります。 「You may go now . 」は「You may go now.」のように使います。Might をこのように使うと、より穏やかな表現になります。「You might go now if you feel like it.」同様に、「May I use your phone?」は許可を求める表現です。 「Might I use your phone?」はよりためらいがち、または丁寧な表現です。
mayのあまり一般的ではない用法は、願望を表すための希望的用法で、 May you live long and happy [ 55 ]のように使われます(英語の仮定法も参照)。
May have は過去の状況に関する不確実性を示すのに対し、might have はそのような意味を持つ場合もあれば、実際には起こらなかったが起こり得た可能性を指す場合もある(上記の条件文も参照)。
may have は可能性を表すのに使われ、許可を表すのには使われません(ただし、 might haveの 2 番目の意味は、場合によっては許可を意味することもあります)。
活用形mayn'tは廃れています。活用形mightn't は主に付加疑問文のタグ( It might snow tonight, mightn't it ? ) や、疑念を表すその他の疑問文 ( Mightn't I come in if I took my boots off? ) で使われます。
mayまたはmightを否定した結果は、解釈が認識論的(可能性について)か義務論的(許可について)かによって異なる。認識論的な意味では、否定は従属節の「内部」にある(今週は投票が行われないかもしれない)。義務論的な意味では、否定は通常外部にある(宿題を終えない限り、パーティーに行くことはできない)が、特別な強調があれば内部否定も可能になる(I may not attend church, if I wish は「教会に行かない許可がある」という意味)。[ 56 ]
前置詞if ( If you should meet her, please give her this ) または主語と助動詞の倒置 ( Should you meet her, please give her this ) のいずれかです。
Should は、期待される行為や状態、あるいは推奨される行為や状態を表す際によく用いられます。アドバイスを与えたり、規範的な行動を説明したりする際にも使用できますが、 mustやhave toほど強い義務感はありません。例えば、「You should never lie」は社会的または倫理的な規範を表しています。また、期待されることを表す際にも使用できます。「This should work」のように。これらの用法では、oughtと同義です。
shallとshould はどちらも、 willとwouldの一人称同義語としてhaveと共に使用できます( shall/should have ( done )) (未来完了形や条件完了形を作るため)。また、shall have は完了相の命令を表すこともあります( You shall have finished your duties by nine o'clock )。shouldがこのように使われる場合、通常は過去のある時点で期待されていたものの、実際には起こらなかったこと (または起こったことが知られていないこと) を表します。I should have done that yesterday (「昨日それをすることが適切であった、または私に期待されていたこと」)。
否定形はshan'tとshouldn't です。
shouldを否定すると従属節が否定されます。否定は内部で行われます ( You shouldn't use botox )。[ 58 ] ( I shouldの意味を否定するには、 I ought not toまたはI am not supposed to を使用できます。)
(I won't be surprise if it rains は、I will be unsprised if it rains を意味します。)しかし、他の助動詞と同様に、否定疑問文(Won't / Wouldn't we submit them in person?)は主節を否定します。[ 63 ]
would rather、would sooner、またはwould as soonは、補語として、原形不定詞節(She would rather go herself)または宣言的内容節(She would rather ( that ) I went)のいずれかを取ることができます。[ 22 ]これらはPPIです。[ 64 ] I would rather not catch the virus ( would ratherに従属する節の否定を伴う)は慣用的ですが、* I wouldn't rather catch the virus(主節の否定を伴う)は明らかに不自然です。過去、現在、未来のいずれを参照しているかにかかわらず、宣言的内容節の補語は点過去を使用できます。I ' d rather you hadn't told her that(過去の反事実); I ' d rather you didn't tell her that(現在/未来); I ' d rather you didn't tell her that when you meet her(未来)[ 65 ]
元々、mote は現在における義務を表すのに使われ、must は過去における義務を表すのに使われていました。moteが日常的に使われなくなると、現代英語ではmust がその役割を引き継ぎました。今日では、mote は助動詞としてごく少数の表現にしか残っておらず、最も有名なのはSo mote it be です。
現在義務という意味合いを持つようになったmustは、過去形を持たない点で、他の主要な助動詞とは異なります。mustは義務や必要性を表します。例:You must use this form(この形式を使用しなければならない);We must try to escape(私たちは脱出を試みなければならない) 。また、間接的な証拠から導き出された結論を表すこともできます(例:Sue must be at home(スーは家にいなければならない))。
haveと過去分詞とともに使用される場合、 mustは認識的な意味合いしか持ちません。例えば、Sue must have leftは、話し手がスーが去ったと結論づけていることを意味します。過去の義務や必要性を表すには、had toまたは他の同義語を使用する必要があります。
mustの否定形はmustn'tです。mustの否定は「内部」で、従属節を否定します。( You must not / mustn't drive after smoke a jointは、運転しないことがあなたがしなければならないことを意味します)。しかし、他の法助動詞と同様に、否定疑問文 ( Mustn't we hide the dope? ) は主節を否定します。[ 66 ]要件や義務がないことを表すには、 have toまたはneed (下記参照)の否定形を使用できます。You don't have to do this ; You needn't do this。
否定形の場合、mustは認識論的な意味ではあまり使われず、代わりにcan't ( It can't be here ; Sue can't have left ) がよく使われます。
ただし、 Mustn't は付加疑問文や疑念を表すその他の疑問文において、 mustの単純な否定として使用できます。We must do it, mustn't we? Mustn't he be in the operating room by this stage?
You ought to have done that earlier。ought not toまたはoughtn't to はshouldn'tの代わりに使用できます。
Had better は、義務論的な意味(推奨される行動や適切な行動を表す ( You ought to / should / had better arrive on time ))ではshouldやoughtと似た意味を持ちますが、認識論的な意味( The Sun ought to / should / ? had better come out soon )では(おそらく冗談以外では)同じ意味を持ちません。
oughtを否定することは「内部的」であり、従属節を否定します ( I ought not to have a third glassfulは、私がすべきことはグラスを断ることだという意味です)。しかし、他の法助動詞と同様に、否定疑問文 ( Oughtn't we to offer cola as well of beer? ) は主節を否定します。[ 75 ]
「They didn't ought to go」のように、 ought を語彙動詞として使用することは、一般的に非標準的な方言に限られると考えられているが[ 76 ]、非公式な標準語法でも見られることがあると説明されている[ 77 ] 。
I don't think you ought toや類似の表現がよく使われます。[ 79 ]疑問文では、oughtはアメリカの会話や小説、イギリスの会話には現れません。イギリスの小説では、助動詞(Ought we to . . . ?)が使われ、do -support付きの語彙的なoughtは使われません。[ 80 ]
助動詞として、needは否定極性の項目であり、否定的な文脈や肯定しない他の文脈で現れます。したがって、次のようになります。
mustと同様に、助動詞needには過去形がありません。
法助動詞としてのneed は、不定詞節の補語 ( He needn't overhaul it ) をとりますが、語彙動詞のneed は、目的語の補語 ( He needs my help ) またはto不定詞節の補語 ( He needs to overhaul it ) をとることができ、場合によっては主語 ( He needs me to overhaul it ) もとります。
必要性の否定は外部的であり、主節を否定します。「You needn't apply again」は、応募しない必要があるとは言っておらず、単に応募する必要がないと言っているだけです。[ 81 ]したがって、動詞must は通常、助動詞needの代わりに使用できますが、mustn't は通常、 needn'tの代わりに使用できません。(例外的に、両語は極性疑問文では同義です。Needn't /mustn't we pay now?)
助動詞need はhaveと一緒に使うこともできます: Need I have done that?ここでは否定形で使われることが最も多く、その行動が(現在の視点から見て)実際には必要ではなかったことを意味します: You needn't have left that tip .
「needs must」(および「must needs」)については、must の項を参照してください。
助動詞であるdareは、否定極性を持つもう一つの要素であり、否定的な文脈や肯定しない他の文脈で用いられます。
dareは現在、語彙動詞としてより一般的になっています。語彙動詞dare は、補語としてto不定詞節をとります( I didn't dare to answer her )。この節には主語が含まれる場合もあります ( He dared me to dive from a higher board )。法助動詞dare は、不定詞節のみを補語とします。
dareの否定は外部で行われます。否定されるのは主節です。(She dare not attempt it は「彼女はそれを試みる勇気がない」という意味です。)[ 83 ]
助動詞dareの使用例と、必要に応じて語彙的dareを用いた同義語の例を以下に示します。
しかし、肯定的な文脈では * He dared speak up は文法的に誤りとなります。
一見するとあまり一般的ではないように見えるが、否定形のdaredn'tは今でも使われていることが確認されている。
Dared は、以前の過去形durstに取って代わった。 [ 86 ]例:
Durst には否定形durstn'tがありました。例:
語彙動詞dareは NPI に近い: She dared to speak up はShe didn't dare to speak upよりはるかに可能性が低い。 [ 93 ]また、語彙と法の区別は曖昧で、「語彙dare はto なしで非肯定的な文脈でよく発生する」: She wouldn't dare ask her father ; また、 She ought to have asked for a raise, but she didn't dare
Did you use to play tennis?に見られます。まれではありますが、過去完了形had usedも確認されています。ケンブリッジ英語文法の法助動詞の 5 つの基準のうち最初の基準は、最後の 3 つの基準を満たさない助動詞usedには関係ありません。助動詞は「意味的にも法助動詞とは全く異なり、表現する意味は法助動詞ではなく相助動詞である」[ 7 ]。ケンブリッジ英語文法では、助動詞used を法助動詞として分類していません。 [ 98 ]
助動詞としてのusedは、 do -supportを伴わない形で用いられており、特に否定形のused not toまたはusedn't to(We used not to worry much about money)や、主語と助動詞が倒置された疑問形(Used he to play the guitar?)に見られる。しかし、近年ではusedは助動詞ではなく語彙動詞として扱われることが増えており、そのため通常はdo -supportを伴う。結果として、否定形のused not toはdidn't use to(You didn't use to be so stressed )に置き換えられることがある。同様に、疑問形(Used you to live here? )はdo -supportを伴う形(Did you use to live here? )に置き換えられることがある。
使用法の詳細については、「英語の助動詞」を参照してください。
表現had betterの動詞had には時制のない形がありません (* Tomorrow you will have better concentration ; * I've had better work hard since I started ; * We're having better concentration )。そのため、法助動詞[ 30 ] [ 99 ] [ 32 ] 、準法助動詞[ 100 ] [ 101 ]、または出現しつつある、あるいは準法助動詞[ 102 ]に分類されることがあります。
had better を否定する場合、had better notまたはhadn't better のどちらを使っても、通常は従属節を否定します。つまり、従属節は内部にあります ( You ' d better not stick around )。ただし、他の助動詞と同様に、否定疑問文 ( Hadn't we better scarper before the police come?
英国のコーパスLOBとFLOB(それぞれ1961年と1991年の資料を使用)および米国のコーパスBrownとFrown(それぞれ1961年と1992年の資料を使用)の使用頻度を比較すると、次のようになります[106][107]。
He must have been given a new jobのように。不定詞to を助動詞とみなすと、He must have been encourage to try to serve teaのように、より長い連鎖が可能になる。
標準英語では、助動詞の後には動詞の原形(助動詞には原形がない)が続くため、2つ目の助動詞を後に続けることはできません。「might have」は文法的に正しい(ここでは「have」は助動詞ではない動詞の原形)ですが、「* might must」は正しくありません。
しかし、法助動詞の連続と思われるものも存在します。might could、must can、might oughta、might would 、must could 、 could oughta 、might should、 may can 、should oughta、might can、may could、would oughta、might will、may will、may should
英語の「I want to be able to dance」の以下の翻訳を比較してください。これらはすべて文字通り「I want can dance」と訳されます(ドイツ語の「I want dance can」を除く)。
