ボートレース

ボートレース（レガッタ）は、ボートやその他の種類の水上艇が水上で競走するスポーツです。オールで漕ぐボートレースは古代エジプトで行われていたことが記録されており[ ^{1 ] 、ボートやその他の水上艇を使ったレースは、}水上艇が存在する限り行われてきたと考えられます^{[ 2 ] 。}

レガッタとは、一連のボートレースのことです。^{[ 3 ]}この用語はヴェネツィア語に由来し、regata は「競争、支配権をめぐる争い」（regatare（「競争する、値切る、小売で売る」）から、おそらくrecatareから）を意味し、通常は手漕ぎまたは帆走する船舶のレースイベントを指しますが、一部の動力ボートレースシリーズもレガッタと呼ばれます。レガッタには、レースイベントを取り巻く社交活動や宣伝活動が含まれることが多く、ボートの種類（または「クラス」）選手権の場合を除き、通常はイベントが開催される町や会場の名前が付けられます。たとえば、「バレーフィールド」などです。^{[ 4 ]}

最大規模で最も人気のあるボートレースの1つは、イングランドのテムズ川で開催されるヘンリー・ロイヤル・レガッタです。世界最大かつ最古のヨットレースの1つは、イングランドのカウズで毎年ロイヤル・ヨット・スコードロンによって開催されるカウズ・ウィークで、通常900隻以上のヨットが集まります。カウズ・ウィークの前身は、カンバーランド・カップ（1775年）、ポート・オブ・ダートマス・ロイヤル・レガッタ（1822年）、ポート・オブ・プリマス・レガッタ（1823年）です。北米最古のレガッタは、1818年以来毎年ニューファンドランドのセントジョンズのクイディ・ヴィディ湖で開催されているロイヤル・セントジョンズ・レガッタです。

他にも、インドのケララ州のヴァッラム・カリや中国のドラゴンボートレースなど、何世紀も続く伝統的なボートレースが存在する。

第17回IDBF世界ドラゴンボートレース選手権は、2025年7月14日から20日にかけてドイツのブランデンブルク・アン・デア・ハーフェルで開催され、36か国以上から約5,000人の選手が小型ボートと標準ボートのカテゴリーで競い合った。^{[ 5 ]}

Sailing race events are typically held for a single one design class and usually last more than one day. Regattas may be hosted by a yacht club, sailing association, town or school as in the case of the UK's National School Sailing Association and Interscholastic Sailing Association (high school) regattas or Intercollegiate Sailing Association (college) regattas.

The Barcolana regatta of the yacht club Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano is currently the Guinness world record holder as the "largest sailing race" with 2,689 boats and over 16,000 sailors at the starting line.^[6] Currently, The Three Bridge Fiasco, conducted by the Singlehanded Sailing Society of San Francisco Bay with more than 350 competitors is the largest sailboat race in the United States.
