カラコルム山脈

カラコルム山脈（英語: /ˌkɑːrəˈkɔːrəm, ˌkær-/、ウルドゥー語: [ kaːɾaːkoːɾəm ]）^[¹^]は、主にカシミール地方に位置するアジアの山脈です^。この山脈はパキスタン、中国、インドの国境にまたがり、北西端はアフガニスタンとタジキスタンにまで広がっています。^{カラコルム}山脈には、14座ある8000メートル級の^山のうち4座があり、その中で最も高いのは地球上で2番目に高い山であるK2です。

カラコルム山脈はアフガニスタン東部のワハン回廊に始まり、東に向かってインドが実効支配するラダック地方、中国が実効支配するアクサイチン地方、そして中国の新疆ウイグル自治区にまで広がっている。カラコルム山脈の大部分はパキスタンが実効支配するギルギット・バルティスタン地域に位置している。カラコルム山脈は東をアクサイチン高原、北東をチベット高原の端、北をヤルカンド川とカラカシュ川の河谷に囲まれ、その向こうには崑崙山脈が連なっている。北西の角にはパミール高原があり、西にはヒンドゥークシュ山脈がある。カラコルム山脈の南の境界は、西から東にかけてギルギット川、インダス川、シャヨク川によって形成されており、これらの川が山脈をヒマラヤ山脈の北西端から隔てている。これらの川は北西方向に流れた後、急に南西方向に向きを変え、パキスタンの平原へと注ぎ込む。カラコルム山脈のほぼ中央にはカラコルム峠があり、かつてはラダックとヤルカンドを結ぶ交易路の一部であったが、現在は使われていない。

この山脈は長さ約500 km (311マイル)で、極地以外では地球上で最も氷河に覆われた場所です。シアチェン氷河(長さ76 km (47マイル) ) とビアフォ氷河(長さ63 km (39マイル) ) は、極地以外で 2 番目と 3 番目に長い氷河です。^[²^]カラコルム山脈は地球上で2 番目に高い山脈で、パミール山脈、ヒンドゥークシュ山脈、ヒマラヤ山脈を含む山脈群の一部です。^[³^]^[⁴^]この山脈には、標高 7,500 m (24,600 フィート) を超える山頂が 18 あり、そのうち4峰は8,000 m (26,000 フィート) を超えています。[ 5 ] ^[⁶^]^[⁷^]^これ^に^は、K2、ガッシャーブルム I、ブロードピーク、ガッシャーブルム IIが含まれます。

名前

カラコルムは、黒い砂利を意味するトルコ語です。中央アジアの商人が元々この名前をカラコルム峠に付けました。^[⁸^]ウィリアム・ムーアクロフトやジョージ・ヘイワードなどの初期のヨーロッパの旅行者は、峠の西にある山脈にこの用語を使い始めましたが、現在カラコルムとして知られる山脈にはムズタグ（「氷の山」を意味する）という用語も使用しました。 ^[⁸^]^[⁹^]後の用語は、インド測量局のトーマス・モンゴメリーの影響を受けており、彼は1850年代にハラムク山の観測所から見える6つの高い山にK1からK6（Kはカラコルムの略）というラベルを付けました。これらのコードは30以上に拡張されました。

インドの伝統的な地理では、これらの山々はクリシュナギリ（黒い山々）、カンハギリ、カンヘリとして知られていた。^{[ 10 ]}

探査

標高が高く険しい地形のため、カラコルム山脈はヒマラヤ山脈のさらに東に位置する地域に比べて人口密度がはるかに低い。ヨーロッパの探検家が最初に訪れたのは19世紀初頭で、その後、 1856年からイギリスの測量隊が調査を開始した。

ムズタグ峠は1887年にフランシス・ヤングハズバンド大佐の探検隊によって越えられ^{[ 11 ]}、フンザ川上流の谷は1892年にジョージ・K・コッカリル将軍によって探検された。1910年代と1920年代の探検により、この地域の地理の大部分が確立された。

カラコルムという名称は、例えばケネス・メイソン[ ⁸^]によって20世紀初頭に、現在バルトロ・ムズタグ山脈として知られる山脈を指すのに使われた。現在では^、この用語は西のフンザの上にあるバトゥラ・ムズタグから東のシャヨク川の湾曲部にあるサセル・ムズタグまでの山脈全体を指すのに使われている。

1999年と2000年に、チャンドラ・プラカシュ・カラによってシャヨク川流域とパナミクからトゥルトゥク村にかけて植物調査が行われた。^{[ 12 ]}^{[ 13 ]}

地質学と氷河

カラコルム山脈は、インド・オーストラリアプレートとユーラシアプレートの境界に位置する、世界で最も地質学的に活発な地域の1つです。^{[ 14 ]}カラコルム山脈の28～50パーセントは氷河に覆われており、15,000平方キロメートル（5,800平方マイル）以上の面積を覆っています。^{[ 15 ]}これは、ヒマラヤ山脈の8～12パーセント、アルプス山脈の2.2パーセントと比較したものです。 [ ^{16 ]山岳}氷河は、気温と降水量の長期的な変化に伴って前進したり後退したりするため、気候変動の指標となる可能性があります。カラコルムの氷河はわずかに後退しているが、^{[ 17 ]}^{[ 18 ]}^{[ 19 ]}氷河が著しく高い速度で質量を失っているヒマラヤとは異なり、カラコルムの多くの氷河は、氷を太陽の熱から遮断する瓦礫の層で覆われている。^{[ 20 ]}このような遮断層がない場合、後退速度は速い。^{[ 21 ]}最近の研究では、中央および西部カラコルムの氷河の質量がわずかに増加または安定していることが明らかになっており、一部の学者はこれを「カラコルム異常」と呼んでいる。^{[ 22 ]}^{[ 23 ]}^{[ 24 ]}^{[ 25 ]氷河が後退していることが判明した東部カラコルムとは対照的である。}^{[ 26 ]}^{[ 27 ]}^{[ 28 ]}^{[ 29 ]}カラコルムの注目すべき氷河には、次のものがある。

氷河期

最後の氷河期には、一連の氷河がチベット西部からナンガ・パルバットまで、またタリム盆地からギルギット地区まで広がっていた。^{[ 30 ]}^{[ 31 ]}^{[ 32 ]}南では、インダス氷河が主要な谷氷河であり、ナンガ・パルバット山塊から標高870メートルまで120キロメートル（75マイル）流れ下っていた。^[³⁰^]^[³³^]北では、カラコルム氷河が崑崙山脈からの氷河と合流し、タリム盆地の標高2,000メートル（6,600フィート）まで流れ下っていた。^[³²^]^[³⁴^]

カラコルム山脈の現在の谷氷河は最大で76キロメートル（47マイル）の長さに達するが、氷河期の谷氷河の支流や主要な谷氷河のいくつかは、最大で700キロメートル（430マイル）の長さがあった。氷河期には、氷河の雪線は現在よりも約1,300メートル（4,300フィート）低かった。^[³²^]^[³³^]
