123The so called "launch date" is not consistently defined:
(1) Sometimes people using the exact date of the first edit of the main page like for the Ossetian Wikipedia where it is 28 Feb 2005, see the revision history of the os main page. In this case, it coincides with the month in which the os-Wikipedia became "active"; see the first appearance in the 2005 monthly Wikipedia statistics on 1 March 2005, so it became active the month before.
(2) Another interpretation of a "launch date" is the date when the Wikipedia became "active" meaning the date leaving the Wikimedia Incubator. This is represented in the first appearance in the statistics with the official article count (and the {{NUMBEROFARTICLES}} magic word). This initial appearance can be determined retrospectively using the historical data from the following statistics:

(3) For other Wikipedias like the German Wikipedia and some others there is a third interpretation. There the lauch date is mentioned as 16 March 2001 but (1) the de main page was created/first edited the 28 August 2002 and (2) the first appearance in the 2001 Wikipedia statistics was the 1 June 2001, meaning that the de-wiki became "active" the month before, so May 2001.
The difference between interpretation (1) and (2) can be even greater: Like the Ladin Wikipedia for example was launched the 17 August 2020 (see reference there). This corresponds exactly to the date on which it becomes “active” – represented by the first appearance in the wikimedia article count statistics, what was the 18(17) August 2020. On the other side the lld main page was already created/first edited on 23 August 2005, fifteen years earlier!
