アングロ・メティス

19 世紀のカナダのメティス族のコミュニティであるアングロ・メティスは、一般的にカントリーボーンとして知られ、毛皮商人の子供でした。彼らは通常、スコットランド人(オークニー諸島、スコットランド本土) またはイングランド人の父親と、先住民の母親を持ち、母親はクリー族、アニシナベクウェ族(特にソルトー族)、ナコダ族などでした。^[¹^] 彼らはまた「イングランドの混血」としても知られていました。一部のアングロ・メティスは今でもこの名前で自認しています。^[²^]彼らの最初の言語は、一般的に母親の言語、つまりクリー語、ソルトー語、アシニボイン語などと英語でした。父親の中にはゲール語やスコットランド語を話す人もおり、その結果「バンジー」として知られるクレオール語が発展しました。^[³^]一部の学者は、アングロ・メティスの存在と貢献、そしてメティス民族全体の複雑な歴史を認めるために、メティスを「Metis」と綴り始めています。^[⁴^]

歴史

アングロ・メティスは、フランス語圏の同胞と同様に、プレーリーやレッドリバー植民地に隣接する地域^{[ 2 ]}^{[ 5 ]}だけでなく、五大湖^{[ 6 ]}やジェームズ湾[ ⁷^]沿いのオンタリオ州の毛皮交易や軍事拠点にも住んでいた。また、イギリス兵と様々な部族の先住民女性との関係から生まれたアングロ・メティスの家族の記録もいくつかある[6]。^彼ら^は^その後^、カナダの政治的、経済的に支配的なイギリス文化により強く結びつく傾向があった。スコットランドの毛皮商人と先住民女性の子孫であれば、父親が彼らの存在を認めることを選択した場合、長老派教会の一員として洗礼を受けることが多かった。モントリオールのセント・ガブリエル・ストリート長老派教会の出生および洗礼記録に関するケーススタディが行われてきました。これは、メティスの子供たちが、生まれた遠隔地の田舎の毛皮交易集落や先住民のキャンプと比べてかなり異質な都市環境に一時的に滞在したり生活したりすることにどのように適応したかを示す良い例となっているからです。^{[ 1 ]}そのため、ほとんどのアングロ・メティスは、教会によって公式に認められたか否かにかかわらず、イギリス人およびスコットランド人の毛皮商人と先住民の女性との間の関係の結果でした。^{[ 8 ]}^{[ 9 ]}^{[ 10 ]}また、彼らの父親の民族性によって、彼らが大人になってどの競合する毛皮交易会社で働くことになるかも決まりました。イギリス人の毛皮商人の子孫であれば、一般的にハドソン湾会社で働いていました。^{[ 10 ]}スコットランド人の毛皮商人の子孫であれば、一般的に「ノーウェスターズ」としても知られるノース・ウェスト会社で働いていました。 ^{[ 1 ]}さらに、アングロ・メティス／カントリーボーンは、男性が一般的に狩猟や罠猟に従事していたフランス語圏のメティスよりも、農業を中心とした定住生活を送っていた。フランス語圏のメティスは、交易や食料源として狩猟に頼っていたため、やや遊牧的な生活を送っていた。アングロ・メティスは、フランス語圏の同胞と同様に人種差別や土地問題に苦しんでいたため、1869年のレッドリバー反乱と1885年の北西反乱の両方で役割を果たした。

19 世紀までに、英語を話すメティスとフランス語を話すメティスは文化的にかなり似通ってきており、イギリス系カナダ人の多数派に対抗して互いに接近していた。彼らの音楽の伝統、特にフィドル音楽は、イギリス諸島とフランスの両方から派生しており、「ジギング」または「レッドリバージグ」と呼ばれるメティスの伝統的なダンスも同様である。彼らの肌の色は、色白で金髪で青い目から、肌の色が濃く、黒髪で黒い目まで様々だった。メティスの長老たちは、コミュニティ内では肌の色に基づいて個人を区別することはなかったと述べている。家族、文化、そしてキリスト教信仰への強い帰属意識が彼らを結びつける絆だった。2つのコミュニティの主な違いは、言語とキリスト教の宗教的所属にあり、フランス系の人々は一般的にローマカトリックであり、イギリス系の人々はプロテスタントであった。カントリーボーンのほとんどは英国国教会または長老派教会であった。^[¹^]彼らは19世紀の大半を通して自給自足農業とバイソン狩りの混合経済に従事し、ハドソン湾会社やノースウェスト会社にも雇用されていた。

19世紀、カントリーボーンはしばしば「混血児」「黒人スコットランド人」「イングランド人」「ハーフブリード」（最後の用語は現在では蔑称とみなされている）などと呼ばれていた。フランス語を話すメティスは彼らを単に「レ・メティス・アングレ」または「レ・オートル・メティス」と呼んだ。アングロ・メティスは次第に、自分たちをフランス語を話すメティスとほとんど変わらない存在だと考えるようになった。

今日では、この2つのグループは政治的に区別されておらず、カナダ大平原では一般的に単にメティスとして知られている。

著名なアングロ・メティス／カントリーボーンには、ジェームズ・イスビスター、トーマス・マッケイ、ジョン・ノーキーなどがいる。
