セント・オールバンズの北にあるワトリング・ストリート。地図には、西暦1世紀末までにワトリング・ストリート沿いに建設されたローマの町々が示されています。^{[ 1 ]}^{[ 2 ]}

ウクサコナは、現在のイングランド、シュロップシャー州テルフォード近郊のレッドヒル[ 3 ]^に^位置^するローマ・ブリテン時代の集落でした。

この集落はローマ時代のワトリング街道の最高地点に位置し、西のヴィロコニウム・コルノヴィオルム（ロクセター）からローママイル約11マイル、東のペンノクルキウム（ペンクリッジ）からローママイル約11マイルの距離にある。 ^[³^]文献上の唯一の言及は2世紀のアントニヌス旅行記である。^[³^]

主要な集落は、ワトリング通りによって二分された小さな囲い地で構成されており、3.20 m × 1.80 m (10.5フィート × 5.9フィート)の単一の堀で囲まれ、4 世紀初頭から中頃にかけての居住の痕跡が見られる。^[⁴^]集落の北には、西暦 57 年のクィントゥス・ヴェラニウスの遠征時の軍需物資貯蔵庫であった可能性のある大きな単一の堀で囲まれた囲い地と、1 世紀後半の信号所であった可能性のあるより小さな二重堀で囲まれた囲い地があった。^[⁴^]

この遺跡は指定史跡であり、^{[ 5 ]}また、危機遺産登録簿にも登録されており、主なリスクは「耕作」である。^{[ 6 ]}

レッドヒル

ウクサコナは一般的にシュロップシャーのレッドヒルまたはレッドヒルにあるとされています。^{[ 7 ]}^{[ 8 ]} 「レッドヒル」という地名はウクサコナ周辺のいくつかの場所に使われています。ウクサコナはシュロップシャー統一自治体区域のシフナル教区（ワトリング通りの南、東）とテルフォード・アンド・レキンのドニントン・アンド・マクストン教区（ワトリング通りの北、西）およびセント・ジョージズ・アンド・プライアーズリー教区（ワトリング通りの南、西）に分かれていますが、^[⁶^]シェリフヘイルズ教区（シュロップシャー統一自治体区域のワトリング通りの北、東）は教区評議会によるとレッドヒルを含み、レッドヒル・ファームも含まれているとされています。^[⁹^]

テルフォード町の東郊外、ドニントン・アンド・マクストン教区のワトリング通りの北、レッドヒル通りの東にある地域はレッドヒルと呼ばれている。この地域には457戸の住宅、スーパーマーケット、コーヒーショップ、その他の小売店、充電ステーション、66床の介護施設の建設計画が承認されている。^{[ 10 ]}^{[ 11 ]}^{[ 12 ]}

1:25,000 スケールの Ordnance Survey 地図では、「Redhill」は Uxocana の南東と北西の両方に表示されています^{[ 13 ]。}一方、NHLE リストに含まれるより大きなスケールの OS 地図では、標高 186m 付近の指定区域内に表示され、また遺跡の真北にも表示されています^{[ 6 ]} 。Telford & Wrekin Council が作成した「Granville Heritage Trail」のリーフレットでは、地図上で「Redhill」は A4640 道路の西側のエリアとして示されており、その地点では「Redhill Way」と呼ばれています^{[ 14 ]。}一方、Redhill Primary Academy はA5 道路の南側、A4640 道路の東側にあります^{[ 15 ] 。}

ロイヤルメールは、新しい住宅地の郵便住所に「レッドヒル」を含めているが、ウクサコナに隣接する火葬場や、さらに東にあるレッドヒルファームの住所にも「レッドヒル」を含めている。^{[ 16 ]}

かつてはA5号線またはワトリング通り沿いのレッドヒルまたはレッドヒルの頂上に三角点があったが、元の位置より南にあるアッパーウッドハウスファームへの私道上の地点に移設されたと報告されている。^{[ 17 ]}
