シスター・メアリー・ウルスラ・グラチャン（本名アルマ・ベロニカ・グラチャン、1901年9月17日- 1992年7月17日）は、1925年に聖母マリア奉献修道女会に入会しました。[ 1 ]彼女はタスマニア大学で教育学の学位を取得した最初の女性でした。
シスター・ウルスラはタスマニア州ビーコンズフィールドで生まれました。[ 1 ]彼女はローンセストンとホバートのプレゼンテーション・スクールで熱心な教師として働きました。1981年に「教育への貢献」によりオーストラリア勲章を授与されました。[ 2 ] [ 3 ]
アルマ・グラチャンは、鉱夫のウィリアム・グラチャンとエミリー・ロスの間に生まれた5人兄弟の長女だった。ビーコンズフィールドの小学校に通っていた頃、彼女は精神的にも学業的にも才能を発揮し、それをガートルード・オサリバン母が見抜き、ローンセストンの聖心学院の寄宿学校に通わせる手配をした。[ 1 ]
アルマは中等学校教育を修了後、タスマニア州教育省で数年間教鞭を執った。教育実習生として勤務した学校：ホバートのセント・メアリー幼稚園（1919～1920年）、 セント・メアリー大学（1920年）、クレッシー州立学校、ウェリントン・スクエア幼児学校（1922年）。[ 5 ]
アルマは1922年8月13日にローンセストン修道院に入会した時21歳で、その際にウルスラという名前を与えられた。[ 1 ]
彼女は1922年に修道生活に入り、3年後に最初の誓願を立てた。シスター・ウルスラは教育と音楽の分野で大学で優秀な成績を収めていた。[ 4 ]
Studying relentlessly to gain university degrees and musical qualifications so that she could more ably assist her students. She was the first woman to receive a Diploma of Education at the University of Tasmania.[1] Arts degree in English, Latin, Psychology, Mathematics.[6][5] In music she achieved an Associate of Music, Australia (A.Mus.A [Performer])[7] and a Licentiate of Music (A.Mus.A. [Teacher]).[8]
Sister Ursula also taught Music before and after school hours, in this way, no doubt, contributing to the meagre income of the Sisters.[1]
When Home Science was introduced in the school, she was able to share her abilities in dressmaking, needlework, spinning, weaving, pottery, painting and other crafts, becoming renowned as a known teacher. She was also exhibited at the Launceston Show over many years, gaining a host of awards in the sewing, knitting and handicraft sections. [4]
Most of her life was spent in Launceston, where she taught at the Sacred Heart College.[9] She taught for 12 years in Hobart and was Head of St Mary's College there for three years.[4]
In 1981 she received the Order of Australia Medal for “service to education”. The Queen personally awarded her with the Order of Australia at Albert Hall in Launceston for contribution to music and education.[4]
In the post-Second Vatican Council years she found change difficult and choosing to retain the former practices and the traditional habit. Sister Mary Ursula Grachan died on 17 July 1992 at Launceston, Tasmania.[1]
