イプスウィッチ( / ˈ ɪ ps w ɪ tʃ / )2024年7月から労働党のジャック・アボット英国議会下院で代表する選挙区である。[n 2]
歴史
この選挙区は14世紀に議会自治区として創設され、 1707年までイングランド下院に2人の国会議員を送り、その後1800年までグレートブリテン下院に、1801年からは連合王国下院に送った。選挙区の議会代表は、 1918年人民代表法に基づき、1人の国会議員による1議席に縮小された。 1983年の総選挙で北西部がセントラルサフォーク選挙区に移管される前は、議会自治区と市町村/郡自治区は同じであった。
1832年の改革法以前、イプスウィッチの選挙権はイプスウィッチ市議会と自由民の手に握られていた。イプスウィッチは党派的な選挙区とみなされており、議会と市議会の選挙では活発な青(トーリー党寄り)と黄(ホイッグ党寄り)の派閥が優勢で、比較的まれにホイッグ党とトーリー党が1人ずつの分裂票が議会に返されるが、地方政党と全国政党の同一性は非常に曖昧になることもあった。[2] 18世紀半ば、選挙区の有権者は約700人で、当時の基準では中規模の自治区であり、政府が支持する候補者に強硬な反対を唱えそうな自治区という評判だった。[3]
イプスウィッチは、1918年に小選挙区として創設されて以来、11回も議席が入れ替わっている接戦の選挙区である。この選挙区は、1970年、1974年2月、1987年、2010年、2015年、2019年を除く第二次世界大戦終結以降のすべての戦後総選挙で労働党候補者が当選しており、一般的に労働党候補者に有利となっている。この選挙区では、伝統的に、どちらの政党もかなりわずかな差で勝利してきた。しかし、1997年から2010年に保守党が獲得するまで、労働党はより安全な差で選挙に勝利し、2015年に保守党が過半数を増やした後、労働党は2017年に議席を取り戻しましたが、2019年には1918年以来初めて2人以上の候補者がいたにもかかわらず保守党の候補者が投票の半分以上を獲得したため、再び議席を失いました。これは2024年に逆転し、労働党は16.8%という健全な過半数で再び議席を獲得しました。
イプスウィッチは、 2017年の総選挙でサフォーク州の全7議席のうち労働党候補が獲得した唯一の議席であり、他の議席は保守党が保持し、イプスウィッチに比べてより田舎の議席である。マーティンの2017年の総選挙での勝利は、労働党が獲得した30議席の純増のうちの1つであった。
選挙区プロフィール
選挙区には、歴史的な建物と近代的な開発が混在するイプスウィッチの町の中心部と港湾が含まれます。イプスウィッチは、主に田舎で辺鄙なサフォークの他の地域の中心として機能する活気のある町であり、ロウストフト以外では、郡内で労働党支持者が集中している唯一の場所です。
中心部の西側にはポートマン ロード フットボール グラウンド、東側には新しい大学があり、南側には 広大なチャントリー公営住宅地があります。
イプスウィッチの保守派寄りの郊外、例えばキャッスル・ヒル、ウェスターフィールド、ケスグレイブなどは選挙区の境界を越えて広がっている。最北の区はサフォーク中央選挙区にあり、保守派が強い地域のいくつかは厳密に区切られた自治区の境界のすぐ外側にあるため、イプスウィッチは労働党の標的選挙区となっている。

イプスウィッチ自治区の選挙区の見直しに伴い、選挙区はセントラル・サフォークとノース・イプスウィッチから小さな地域を獲得した。
2023年のウェストミンスター選挙区の定期見直しでは、境界は変更されなかった。[8]
現在の選挙区は、キャッスル・ヒル、ホワイトハウス、ウィットンの各選挙区を除くイプスウィッチ自治区の大部分で構成されています。

イプスウィッチ市に所属する自由民は、14世紀からイングランド議会に2人の市民を選出する権利を有しており、この権利は議会がスコットランドおよびアイルランドと統合された後も途切れることなく続き、 1918年にようやく単一選挙区となった。
