サントリオサントリオ

サントリオ・サントリオ （1561年3月29日 - 1636年2月25日^{[ 1 ]}）は、本名がサントリオ・サントリ^{[ 2 ]}^{[ 3 ]}（またはデ・サンクトリイス）で、英語ではパドヴァのサンクトリウス^{[ 4 ]}としてよく知られているイタリアの生理学者、医師、教授であり、生命科学に定量的アプローチを導入し、実験生理学の父とみなされている。彼はまた、いくつかの医療機器の発明者としても知られている。1614年に書かれた彼の著作『De Statica Medicina』は、多くの出版物に取り上げられ、何世代にもわたる医師に影響を与えた。

人生

サントリオは1561年3月29日、ヴェネツィア領イストリア（現在のスロベニア）のカポディストリアで生まれた。^[⁵^]サントリオの母エリザベッタ・コルドーニ（またはコルドニア）はイストリアの貴族の女性だった。サントリオの父アントニオはフリウリ出身の貴族で、ヴェネツィア共和国で市の条例長を務めていた。^[⁶^]

彼は故郷で教育を受け、ヴェネツィアで学業を続け、 1578年にパドヴァ大学に入学し、1585年に医学の学位を取得した。^{[ 7 ]}彼は1587年から1594年までクロアチアの貴族の侍医を務め、ヴェネツィアで開業し、そこでガリレオと出会った。^{[ 8 ]}

サントリオは1636年2月25日にヴェネツィアで亡くなった^{[ 1 ]。}死因は長年患っていた尿路疾患の合併症であり、長年医師として仕えていた聖母マリアのしもべ教会（イタリア語：Santa Maria dei Servi）に埋葬された^{[ 9 ] 。}

仕事

1611年から1624年まで、サントリオはパドヴァ大学の理論医学の教授を務め、体温、不感蒸泄、体重に関する最初の実験を行った。1624年、元老院の政治的反対により大学を辞任した。教授の称号と年金は退職後1年間保持され、1625年にヴェネツィアで医師として復帰した。^{[ 10 ]} 1630年には、ヴェネツィアのペストを治療するために任命されたヴェネツィア医師会のメンバーの1人であった。^{[ 11 ]}

サントリオが科学と医学の歴史において重要な位置を占めているのは、主に実験方法の発展への貢献によるものです。特に、初期の粒子説の確立、そして何よりも、脈拍数、体温、不感蒸泄といった身体の恒常性バランスを確かめるための精密機器の発明が彼の功績です。これらの要素は、実際にはパルスロギアと呼ばれる特殊な機器、温度計（ハイドロラビア・サンクトリイ）、そしてサントリオの名前が今日でも関連付けられているセッラ・サンクトリイと呼ばれる体重測定椅子を用いて測定されました。 ^{[ 3 ]}

発明

サントリオは、風速計、水流計、脈拍計（脈拍数を測定する装置）、温度計を最初に使用した人物である。^{[ 12 ]}彼の 脈拍計と温度計は、ヴェネツィアで彼の学識ある友人であったガリレオ・ガリレイ、パオロ・サルピ、ジョヴァンニ・フランチェスコ・サグレドによる同様の発明よりも古い。 ^{[ 1 ]}サントリオは1602年に脈拍計を、1611年に温度計を導入した。 ^{[ 13 ]}

脈拍計はおそらく医学史上初の精密機器であった。サントリオは新しい器具を用いた広範な実験により、脈拍に関するガレノスの理論を標準化し、さまざまな規則的および不規則な周波数を定量的に記述することができた。^{[ 14 ]} 1世紀後、別の医師であるフランソワ・ボワシエ・ド・ソヴァージュ・ド・ラクロワは、脈拍計を用いて心臓機能を検査した。^{[ 15 ]}

代謝の研究

サントリウスは、ガレノスや他の古代の医師たちが既に知っていた、いわゆる不感発汗を研究し、代謝の研究を始めた。^[¹⁶^] 30年間、サントリウスは椅子型の計量器を使って、自分自身と、食べたり飲んだりした物、尿や糞便の重さを量った。彼は食べた物の重さと排泄物の重さを比較し、後者は、8ポンドの食べ物に対して排泄された排泄物はわずか3ポンドだったため、かなり少なかった。^[¹⁷^]サントリウスはまた、患者の研究にも計量器を使用したが、これらの実験の記録は失われている。^[¹⁶^]

この発見から彼が導き出した注目すべき結論は以下の通りである。

不感蒸泄は、全身に発汗する毛穴から発生し、網のような皮膚で覆われているか、口からの呼吸によって行われます。通常、1日で約半ポンドの量になり、グラスに息を吹きかけるとそれがはっきりとわかります。^{[ 12 ]}

この重要な実験は、医学における体重測定の重要性の起源である。 ^{[ 18 ]}彼の実験は後継者によって再現され、拡張され、最終的には1790年にアントワーヌ・ラヴォアジエによって凌駕されたが、彼は今でも実験生理学の父として称賛されている。彼がこの実験で製作し使用した「体重測定椅子」も有名である。^{[ 15 ]}^{[ 17 ]}
