2011年4月25日から28日にかけて、アメリカ国立気象局の地方気象予報局はアメリカ国内で359個の竜巻を確認し、カナダ環境省はオンタリオ州で別の竜巻を確認した。これらの竜巻は、 2011年のスーパーアウトブレイクと呼ばれる大規模な竜巻発生の一部であり、アメリカ南部、中西部、北東部の21州とカナダのオンタリオ州で367個の竜巻が発生、記録上最大の竜巻発生となった。
4月25日に発生が拡大するにつれ、テキサス州とアーカンソー州全域で多数の竜巻が発生し、アーカンソー州ホットスプリングスビレッジ近郊で発生したEF3竜巻は大きな被害をもたらし、1人が死亡、アーカンソー州ビロニア地域で発生した長距離のEF2竜巻は1時間以上にわたって発生し、4人が死亡、16人が負傷した。[1] [2]
4月26日は主に弱い竜巻で死者は出なかったが、その日の注目すべき竜巻は、テキサス州の一部を横切ってルイジアナ州まで進んだEF2の竜巻と、キャンベル陸軍飛行場を襲い100万ドル（2011年米ドル）の被害をもたらした短時間のEF3の竜巻だった。[3] [4] [5] 27日から28日早朝にかけて、ミシシッピ州からバージニア州にかけての地域で、一連の壊滅的で長距離を移動した激しい竜巻により300人以上が死亡した。これにはEF4と評価された11の竜巻とEF5と評価された4つの竜巻が含まれていた。特に壊滅的で長時間続いたEF5のくさび形竜巻は、アラバマ州北部を横切ってテネシー州まで吹き荒れ、72人が死亡し、ハックルバーグ、フィル・キャンベル、タナー、ハーベストなどのいくつかの小さな町が壊滅した。大型で長い軌跡をたどるEF4ウェッジ竜巻が複数のテレビ局で生中継され、アラバマ州タスカルーサとバーミンガムの人口密集地域に壊滅的な被害をもたらし、64人が死亡した。[6] [7]
ミシシッピ州スミスビル、アラバマ州コルドバ、アラバマ州レインズビル、アラバマ州オハッチー、アラバマ州カルマン、ジョージア州トレントン、ジョージア州リングゴールド、テネシー州アピソン、バージニア州グレイドスプリングなど、数多くの小さな町が激しい竜巻の直撃に見舞われ、死者数は2桁に達した。竜巻が終息するまでの2日間でさらに319人が死亡し、死者数は31の竜巻で合計324人となった。また、別の雷雨の影響で24人が死亡した。[6] [7]
4月27日の発生のピーク時には、午後2時28分（1928 UTC）から午後9時10分（0210 UTC）までの期間は、ほぼ7時間連続で竜巻活動が続いた期間であり、この間に94個の竜巻が上陸した。この期間中、ミシシッピ州フィラデルフィアで午後2時30分（1930 UTC）に発生したEF5竜巻に始まり、午後9時9分（0209 UTC）のレイク・マーティン/デイドビルのEF4竜巻の消滅で終了した、15個の激しいEF4+竜巻はすべて連続して発生した。 [7]この発生時の竜巻のいくつかは、例外的に長い経路をたどった。4月27日の竜巻3個は120マイル（190 km）以上移動し、4個目は97マイル（156 km）を横断した。 7つの竜巻（4月25日のビロニア竜巻と4月27日の6つの竜巻）は、1時間以上地上に留まりました。ミシシッピ州とアラバマ州をまたいだ長距離のEF4竜巻は、発生中の竜巻としては最長の2時間53分から短縮されました。[7]
竜巻の発生は夜通し続き、4月28日の朝まで続き、フロリダからニューヨークにかけてさらに47個の竜巻が発生した。竜巻のほとんどは比較的弱く、被害も比較的軽微だった。竜巻活動の多くは午前中半ばまでに収まり、発生が終息した午後にはわずか10個の竜巻が発生しただけだった。[6] [7]
