ハースト記念鉱山ビル

カリフォルニア大学バークレー校のハースト記念鉱山ビルは、同大学の材料科学工学科の本拠地であり、生体材料、化学および電気化学材料、計算材料、電子、磁気および光学材料、構造材料のサブ分野の研究および教育スペースを備えています。 ^[³^]ボザール様式の古典復興建築は、国家歴史登録財に登録されており、カリフォルニア州歴史的建造物第946号の一部として指定されています。 ^[⁴^]この建物は、建築家でバークレー校の卒業生であるジュリア・モーガンと、当時の鉱山学部長サミュエル・B・クリスティの協力を得て、ジョン・ガレン・ハワードによって設計されました。これは、ハワードが同キャンパスで設計した最初の建物でした。建設は、フィービー・ハースト・キャンパス開発計画の一環として1902年に始まりました。この建物は、成功した鉱山業者であった彼女の夫ジョージ・ハーストの記念として捧げられました。

1998年から2003年にかけて、この建物は大規模な改修、増築、耐震補強工事を受け、建物の地下にプラットフォームが建設され、最大1メートルの横方向移動が可能な吊り下げシステムが設置された。増築部分を歴史的建造物と区別するため、新しい構造には（石材ではなく）ショットピーニング加工されたアルミニウムと、より現代的なデザインが採用された。

歴史

ジョージ・ハースト

フィービー・ハースト

ハースト記念鉱山ビルの建設は1902年に始まり、1907年に完成し、同年8月23日に献堂式が行われた。建設費106万5000ドルはフィービー・アパーソン・ハーストからの寄付で、鉱業で巨万の富を築いた亡き夫、ジョージ・ハースト上院議員の追悼のために建てられた。 ^{[ 5 ]}

1903年に建設が始まった当時、鉱山大学は247人の学生（大学全体の学生数の11%）を擁し、世界最大の鉱山大学でした。大学には専用の建物がなく、大学の規模から、ハースト計画に基づいて最初に建設される建物としてハースト記念鉱山ビルが選ばれました。^{[ 5 ]}

大学建築家のジョン・ガレン・ハワードは、鉱山学部長のサミュエル・B・クリスティ教授とバークレーで教育を受けた建築家ジュリア・モーガンの協力を得て、この建物を設計した。建築家たちは、ヨーロッパとアメリカの鉱山建築の過去の例を基に、古典的な要素と建築の革新を調和させ、ハースト・キャンパス計画に対するハワードのビジョンを特徴づけるボザール様式に忠実な建物を創造しようとした。 ^{[ 5 ]}このビジョンを実現するために、ハーストはハワードとクリスティがアメリカとヨーロッパ各地の鉱山学校を訪問する旅費を負担し、図書館や病院が建築の進化の中で実現したように、鉱山学校の標準化された建築様式を研究できるようにした。ハワードとクリスティは鉱山大学の例をあまり見つけることができなかった。彼らが訪れた建物の大部分は元々別の目的で建てられたものだった。ハワードは、研究できる例が少ないため、自分の設計が進化の初期段階にある建築様式の誤りに陥りやすいのではないかと懸念した。この問題が、ハワードが「弾力性のある」設計を考案するきっかけとなった。建物の外殻は内部とは別に建設され、将来的に外殻を廃棄したり建物の強度を損なったりすることなく内部を変更できるようにするためである。換気口や煙突も外殻とは別に建設された。これらの建築要素は、外壁構造よりも寿命が短いと予想されたためである。バークレー校にあるハワード設計の別の建物であるカリフォルニア・ホールも、「弾力性のある」内部構造で建設された。^[⁶^]

ハワードは、建設工事完了後に自分たちの仕事を振り返り、次のように述べた。

私たちは、安易な仮装や建築的な装飾によってではなく、有機的な構成によって、内側から外側へと働きかけ、物事の本質が語るようにすることで美を確保しようとしてきたのです。表現が真実であるならば、最初はどんなに奇妙に思えても、最終的には必然的なものとして理解されるはずです。^{[ 5 ]}

外観デザイン

建物の屋根は瓦葺きで、ブラケットは木製、装飾は古典様式である。^{[ 6 ]}屋根瓦は、後期（1790年以降）のカリフォルニアの伝道所建築で使用されたスペインの屋根瓦を彷彿とさせる。建物の中心となる中央の玄関ホールは、建物の正面で最も高い位置にあるため、外観から際立っている。^{[ 5 ]}ハワードは、対称性と階層性という古典的な要素ではなく、装飾的なディテールで隙間を埋めることで、外観を統一した。ロバート・インガソル・エイトケンが制作した6つの花崗岩の持ち送り彫刻が、木製の屋根ブラケットを支えている。ハワードによれば、西側の2体の男性像は「原始的な要素」を、東側の2体は「永遠の力」を象徴しており、鉱業の性格を表している。中央の２体の女性像はバランスのとれた存在感を放ち、「理想的な芸術、生命の最後の花――新鮮で、神秘的で、純粋――混沌の虚空から現れる」ことを象徴している。^{[ 6 ]}

インテリアデザイン

中央のエントランス前室はハースト上院議員に捧げられ、鉱山博物館のスペースとしても使用される予定でした。これは、フランス国立図書館のアンリ・ラブルーストの閲覧室（1858～68年）を想起させるように設計されました。^[⁵^]建物の外側から中に入る金色のオーク材の扉は、同様にドラマチックな高天井の空間への劇的な入り口を作り出すことを意図しており、その空間では、地上50フィートのドームがバフ色のグアスタビーノタイルで覆われています。内部構造を支える柱は鋼鉄製の梁で構成され、鋼鉄製の格子トラスの上に設置された青緑色の鋳鉄製の手すりが並ぶ2階建てのバルコニーを貫通しています。レンガなどの構造の細部は、無骨な美学を伝えるために意図的に露出されています。グアスタビーノタイルは、ドーム構造システムの独自の特徴でした。それらは、 1881年に米国に移住し、1890年代にボストン公共図書館の地下室での仕事で名声を得たバレンシア出身の建築家ラファエル・グアスタビーノによって設計された。ハワードとグアスタビーノ社は鉱山建物の建設前に専門的な書簡を交わしており、ハワードはタイル工事のためにグアスタビーノの職人を雇った。^[⁶^]

玄関の北側の壁には、ジョージ・ハーストに捧げられた銘板が設置されており、そこには次のように記されていた。

この建物は、質素で誠実な人であり、優れた鉱夫であったジョージ・ハーストを記念して建てられたものです。彼の生き方や人柄は、地球の厳しい場所で危険を冒して金を探し求めた開拓者たちの精神を体現していました。彼は人々に温かい心を持ち、困っている人がいればいつでも手を差し伸べました。山々から富を得た彼は、誰の財産も奪わず、誰の機会も奪いませんでした。

玄関ホールの南側と西側の部屋は、もともと学部長室を含む事務室でした。講義室と博物館学芸員室は、それぞれ南側と東側にありました。玄関ホールの北側の中央の中庭には鉱山研究所があり、研究所の東西両端には冶金学と研究室、図書館、事務室、講義室がありました。^{[ 5 ]}建物の北端にある3階建ての塔は、乾燥鉱石の粉砕に使用されていました。塔の東側に隣接して銅と鉛の製錬研究所があり、西側に隣接して金と銀の製錬所がありました。^{[ 6 ]}

象徴主義

ハワードは、ハースト計画の他の建物の柔らかな美学を補完するものとして、この建物に無骨で工業的な美学を与えた。ハワードは鉱山ビルを「美しい姉妹たちの中にいる、親切でぶっきらぼうな兄」と表現した。^{[ 5 ]}これらの建築的特徴は、建物の機能を伝えることも意図していた。建物の献堂式の5年前、1902年にカリフォルニア大学マガジンとのインタビューで、ハワードは次のように述べている。

目的は、芸術、文学、自然科学の大学とは区別される鉱山工学大学の性格を表現することであった。建築における文学の表現は、科学研究のそれよりも純粋に古典的な性格を要求する。例えば図書館のような建物は、矛盾なくローマ建築やルネサンスのあらゆる豪華絢爛さを謳歌することができる。世界の伝統は、ごく自然にこの方向へと向かう。しかし…そのような繊細で高度に組織化されたモチーフは、鉱山建築にはほとんど居場所がない。鉱山建築は、美しさは劣らないものの、はるかに原始的で、細部に関しては精巧に開発されておらず、比例の規範としても建築様式としても極端な古典主義の伝統の影響を受けていない扱いを要求する。鉱業という職業は、地球のまさに本体と骨格に関わるものであり、その過程は世界の奥底への容赦ない攻撃であり、最も粗野で原始的な力との闘いである。そこには本質的に根源的で、原始的な何かがある。そして、建築におけるその表現は、真に粗野で、巨石的なものを帯びていなければならない。喚起される感情は、優雅さというよりも力強さの感覚でなければならない。鉱山建物の設計において、その目的を誠実に表現し、同時に、その目的を誠実に表現する将来の建物（ほとんどの場合、より大きな快適さを目的とする）と調和する設計を生み出すこと、これが建築家が芸術的段階でその仕事に取り組む際の目標であった。^{[ 6 ]}
