現在の戦闘

ナバス・デ・メンブリージョの戦いは、 1811年12月29日、スペインのメリダ近郊で行われた。この戦いでは、ローランド・ヒル将軍率いるイギリス軽騎兵隊が、ヌヴォー大尉率いる小規模なフランス帝国軍を攻撃した。戦闘中、方陣を組んだフランス兵はイギリス騎兵隊に大敗を喫させた。歴史家のイアン・フレッチャーはこの戦いを「イベリア半島における騎兵戦の中でも特に残念な出来事の一つ」と評している。

背景

1812年の終わり頃、英ポルトガル軍の最高司令官であるアーサー・ウェルズリー、ウェリントン子爵は、タリファ包囲戦で占領されていたジャン・ド・デュー・スール元帥率いるフランス軍の注意をそらしたいと考えていた。そこで彼は、メリダに駐屯するルドヴィク・マテウシュ・デンボフスキ将軍のフランス第5歩兵師団に対する襲撃をローランド・ヒル少将に依頼した。ヒルは12月27日に1万2000人の兵士を率いてスペインに向かい^[¹^]、翌日メリダから30キロ離れたラ・ロッカ村に到着した。同時刻、食料補給を求めて、小規模なフランス軍がこの方向に進軍していた。この部隊は、ヌヴォー大尉率いるフランス第88歩兵連隊の3個中隊と軽騎兵の分遣隊で構成され、総勢約400人であった。^[²^]

戦い

12月29日、ヒルの先鋒部隊はナバス・デ・メンブリージョ村付近でフランスの軽騎兵隊の分遣隊を襲撃した。軽騎兵隊はすぐにヌヴォー大尉に知らせ、ヌヴォー大尉はメリダ方面へ撤退することを決めた。この動きを見たヒルは、歩兵の支援がないまま、騎兵隊に逃走するフランス軍を追撃して捕らえるよう命じた。^{[ 2 ]}

国王ドイツ軍団第2軽騎兵連隊と第13軽竜騎兵連隊の2個中隊がヌヴォーの部隊に突撃したが、フランス軍は森の中に方陣を組み、攻撃側は帝国軍兵士を守るコルクの木によって混乱に陥った。混乱したイギリス軽騎兵は、フランス軍の方陣の的確な射撃によって5回撃退された。その後、ヌヴォーの部隊は、戦闘の終盤に到着したイギリス砲兵隊の攻撃にもかかわらず、メリダ方面へ撤退することに成功した。^{[ 2 ]}

余波

イギリス軍は死者3名、負傷者37名を出した。2個連隊それぞれで20名の死傷者を出した。^{[ 2 ]}別の資料では負傷者36名としている。^{[ 1 ]}フランス軍はイギリス軍の砲撃で死者2名、負傷者9名しか出なかったが、騎兵隊に対しては死者は出なかった。ヒルはこの敗北に不満を抱いた。なぜなら、この敗北によって遠征の残りの期間で成功する可能性がなくなったからである。^{[ 3 ]}それにもかかわらず、ヒルの接近を知らされたデンボウスキー将軍は、メリダを撤退し、アンダルシアでスール元帥と合流することを決めた。ヒルはその後まもなくメリダを占領し、スペイン領内を進軍し続け、その後ポルトガルに戻った。^{[ 1 ]}

歴史家イアン・フレッチャーは、イギリス側の視点から見て、ナバス・デ・メンブリージョの戦いを「イベリア半島における騎兵戦の中でも特に残念な出来事の一つ」と評した。彼はこの戦いを、1810年7月に同様の状況（方陣を組んだ歩兵に対する騎兵突撃の失敗）で行われたバルキージャ（またはビジャール・デ・プエルコ）の戦いと比較した。ナバス・デ・メンブリージョの具体的な事例では、フランス軍の地形の巧みな利用、ヌヴォー大尉の技量、そして兵士たちの規律の厳しさがイギリス軍の敗北につながったが、フレッチャーは「これ以上の活躍は期待できなかった」イギリス騎兵の行動を全く問題視しなかった。^{[ 3 ]}
