バジル・スチュワート

バジル・L・スチュワートはカナダの政治家で、2018年から2022年までプリンスエドワードアイランド州サマーサイドの市長を務めた。それ以前は1985年から2014年まで市長を務め、2009年から2010年にはカナダ地方自治体連盟の会長を務めた。 ^{[ 1 ]}スチュワートは2014年のサマーサイド市長選挙 でビル・マーティンに敗れた。 2018年のサマーサイド市長選挙で当選して復職したが、 2022年の再選を目指したが落選した。

スチュワートは市長に選出される前、1971年から1984年までサマーズサイド警察署の警察官を務め、その後退職した。

スチュワートは警察を退職後、地方政治に転身し、1985年にサマーズサイド町の町長に選出された。1988年と1991年にも再選された。1994年には、現在のサマーズサイド市（旧サマーズサイド町）の初代町長に就任した。1997年、2000年、2003年、2006年、2010年の市議会選挙でも再選を果たしている。

1993年、スチュワートは連邦選挙で進歩保守党候補としてエグモント選挙区から出馬した。しかし、当時現職だった自由党のジョー・マグワイア議員 に敗れ、マグワイア議員は約3,700票の得票差で勝利した。

彼は、結局開催されなかったマイケル・ジャクソン追悼コンサートへの保証金として送金された130万ドルの税金を浪費したとして告発された。^{[ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ]}「2011年1月、市は、カトリーナ・バーグ・サスmeierとスターリンク・プロダクションズ社に対して、詐欺、詐欺共謀、過失による虚偽表示、契約解除（取り消し）の容疑で、米国カリフォルニア州北部地区サンノゼ支部の地方裁判所に訴状を提出した。」

2014年のサマーズサイド市長選挙では、サマーズサイドの実業家であるビル・マーティンが、スチュワートの2092票に対し4614票を獲得して市長に選出され、スチュワートの29年間にわたるサマーズサイド市長としての任期に終止符が打たれた。^{[ 5 ]}

スチュワート氏は、カナダ・ピーウィー野球選手権、カナダ女子ソフトボール選手権、ナショナルホッケーリーグの親善試合など、大規模なトーナメントやイベントを市に誘致する上で重要な役割を果たしてきた。また、コンソリデーテッド・クレジット・ユニオン・プレイスの建設においても中心的な役割を担った。

Stewart is also a member of various associations. He is the President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, and a member of the Federation of Prince Edward Island Municipalities, and National Board of Directors to Sustainable Municipal Infrastructure. In the past, he was also served as Chair of Atlantic Caucus in 1998 and Chair of National Economic Development Committee from 1998–2000.

In 2015, he was named to the National Capital Commission.^[6] In 2017, Stewart was named to the Order of Canada.^[7]

Mayor Stewart and city council of Summerside filed a lawsuit^[8] against Deputy Police Chief David Griffin in 1997. The case is still in the courts as of October 2010 appealing the payment of interest on the damages owed to Griffin based on a judgement in March 2006 by Supreme Court Justice Wayne Cheverie who ruled in favour of Griffin in his malicious prosecution suit against the city.

Stewart lives in Summerside with his wife, Gail Inman-Stewart. He has two children—Mary-Jane (Steve) Dyer and Major (Holly Peters) Stewart. Stewart also has four granddaughters — Mya Stewart and Amber, Emma and Madison Dyer. He has four grandsons- Brett, Isaac and Joseph Stewart, and Lincoln Dyer.

His interests include hockey, swimming, and music (he plays guitar, harmonica, fiddle, and mandolin). Baw Basil also likes the water street bakery.
