レスター旧市街の主要な史跡。ローマ時代と中世の城壁は点線で示されています。ビジターセンターはグレイフライアーズ修道院跡地に建っており、緑色の太字で示されています。現存する唯一のローマ時代の遺跡は紫色で示されています。世俗的な史跡は青色で示されています。町に現存する5つの古代教会は赤色で示されています。解散した托鉢修道院と礼拝堂の跡は黒色で示されています。川を挟んだ対岸にあるレスター修道院は、地図の北東の境界線の外側に位置しています。

リチャード3世ビジターセンターは、イングランドのレスターにある博物館で、イングランド王リチャード3世の生涯と、2012年から2015年にかけて行われた彼の遺体の発見、発掘、再埋葬の物語を紹介しています。

リチャード3世の埋葬場所は長らく不明だったが、レスターの駐車場にあると推測されていた。DNA鑑定によって、彼の遺骨が特定された。

このセンターは2014年7月26日に、当時発掘されたばかりのグレイフライアーズ修道院跡地にオープンした。グレイフライアーズは中世の修道院で、1485年にボズワースの戦いで戦死した国王が埋葬された場所である。

位置

このセンターは、かつての学校であるオールダーマン・ニュートンズ・スクールの建物を利用しており、その隣には、フィリッパ・ラングレーとリチャード3世協会による発掘プロジェクト中にリチャード王の遺骨が発見された、かつての社会福祉局の駐車場がある。この発掘プロジェクトは、レスター大学考古学サービス（ULAS）によって2012年8月25日に開始され、遺骨は初日に発見された。

発見に対する世界的な関心を受けて、レスター市議会はビクトリア朝時代の校舎をビジターセンターに改築した。^{[ 1 ]} このプロジェクトには、修道院の聖歌隊席にあった元の墓地の上に屋根付きのエリアを設け、教会の聖歌隊席の床の一部も利用している。センターの建設費は400万ポンドで、設計はメイバー・アーキテクツのポール・イーストが担当した。^{[ 2 ]}

アクセスと保全

埋葬地は指定史跡の一部である。2017年12月、ヒストリック・イングランドは旧修道院跡地の大部分を史跡に指定した。関連する建物は既に解体されていたが、この場所は考古学的価値があると評価された。^{[ 3 ]}^{[ 4 ]}

受賞

2018年10月、ビジターセンターは、大英博物館や国立鉄道博物館と同じカテゴリーにノミネートされた後、グループレジャー＆トラベルアワードで「ベストミュージアム」を受賞した。^{[ 5 ]}
