自治体
2024年5月現在、テキサス州の1,225の自治体[3] [a]には、 971の市、231の町、23の村が含まれています。これらの指定は、州の法律に基づく米国国勢調査局の要件によって決定されており、自治体の自己申告による指定と一致しない場合があります。[4]テキサス州の自治体の種類は、1987年に法典化された地方自治法で定義されています。市、町、村の指定は、法典のA、B、Cタイプの一般法都市に置き換えられました。[5]
テキサス州には、一般法と自治の2 つの形態の自治体政府がある。一般法の自治体には憲章がなく、州の一般法によって付与された特定の権限に制限されている。自治自治体には憲章があり、テキサス州憲法から「地方自治の全権限」[6]を得ている。5,000 人以上の住民を抱える一般法の自治体は、自治憲章を採択するための選挙を命じることができる。その後、自治体の人口が 5,000 人を下回った場合、自治憲章を維持できる。[7]
