『Seeds in the Heart: Japanese Literature from Earliest Times to the Late Sixteenth Century 』は、ドナルド・キーンの4冊シリーズ『A History of Japanese Literature』の最初の本（ただし、執筆および出版されたのは最後）で。 ^{[ 1 ]}本書に続いて、『World Within Walls: Japanese Literature of the Pre-Modern Era, 1600–1867』、『Dawn to the West: Japanese Literature of the Modern Era; Fiction』、そしてシリーズ最後の本である『 Dawn to the West: Japanese Literature in the Modern Era; Poetry, Drama, Criticism』が出版されている。 ^{[ 2 ]}本書は、『古事記』や『源氏物語』^{[ 3 ]}などの古典的な散文作品や、藤原定家や紀貫雪といった主要な和歌人から、鎌倉時代を経て能や連歌の始まりまでを網羅しており、本文と脚注合わせて1175ページ（参考文献、索引、用語集を除く）に及ぶ。
