マンチェスターは産業革命の産物であり、その工業の歴史で知られています。この都市は運河、鉄道高架橋、綿糸工場、輸送の前後に商品を保管または保管するために使用された倉庫で知られています。産業革命の結果、この都市にはビクトリア朝時代 (1837-1901) 以前からエドワード朝時代 (1910) の終わりまで、さまざまな倉庫が集まっています。
市内には、商品陳列、海外倉庫、梱包倉庫、出荷倉庫、鉄道倉庫、運河倉庫の 6 つの主な倉庫タイプがあります。1806 年には 1,000 をわずかに上回る程度でしたが、1815 年までにほぼ 2 倍の 1,819 に増加しました。マンチェスターは「倉庫の街」と呼ばれました。最も古い倉庫はキング ストリート周辺に建てられましたが、1850 年までに倉庫はポートランド ストリート、後にはウィットワース ストリートにまで広がりました。これらはキャッスルフィールドの運河倉庫の直系の子孫です。
