Smoothwall (formerly styled as SmoothWall) is a Linux distribution designed to be used as an open sourcefirewall. Smoothwall is configured via a web-based GUI and requires little or no knowledge of Linux to install or use.
Smoothwall is also a private software company based in the UK that specializes in the development of web content filtering, safeguarding and internet security solutions, which also maintains the SmoothWall open source project.
Smoothwall began life as Smoothwall GPL in 2000 as a freely redistributable piece of open source software. In 2001, they released a proprietary version that is currently the primary distribution of the software containing extra features. Smoothwall still maintains its open source version with Smoothwall Express (latest release V3.1 in 2014). Smoothwall's filtering and safeguarding products are typically sold into educational organizations and businesses.
In 2017, Smoothwall announced a management buyout backed by private equity fund, Tenzing. The new management team was led by Georg Ell, previously Director of Western Europe at Tesla, who was appointed as Group CEO in May 2018. Georg was joined by existing Board members Gavin Logan, Douglas Hanley and Manprit Randhawan in the management of the Smoothwall business, along with Lisa Stone, who took the position as chairperson.
On 5 August 2021, Tenzing announced[2] they had agreed to sell their investment in Smoothwall to Australian security firm Family Zone Cyber Safety for £75.5 million (A$142m cash consideration.)[3] The deal was completed on 17 August 2021, with a £10.5m deferred balance of the sale price paid on 1 September 2021.[4]

Smoothwall Server Editionは、Smoothwall Ltd.が2001年11月11日にリリースした最初の製品でした。基本的にはSmoothwall GPL 0.9.9に同社によるサポートが付属したものでした。この製品は、その後のほぼすべての製品と同様に、 Smoothwall Ltd.から通信販売でCD-ROM版を直接購入できるようになっていました。

DansGuardianの作者であるダニエル・バロンが2002年4月に当社に入社した後、Smoothwall Corporate Guardianと呼ばれるCorporate Serverの派生版がリリースされ、DansGuardianの派生版であるSmoothGuardianが統合されました。Corporate Guardianは、スタンドアロンのWebプロキシ、キャッシュ、フィルタリングソリューションです。SmoothGuardianは、Corporate Serverの顧客向けにスタンドアロンモジュールとしても提供され、SmoothGuardモジュールに取って代わりました。
スクールガーディアンは、コーポレートガーディアンの派生版として開発され、学校での使用に特化して設計されたパッケージに、Active Directory / LDAP認証サポートとファイアウォール機能を追加したものです。
2005年6月13日にリリースされたCorporate Serverのバージョン4は、Corporate Firewallに名称変更されました。2008年2月には、Corporate Guardianは2008年版のリリースに伴い、Network Guardianに名称変更されました。
2005年5月9日にリリースされたSmoothwall Advanced Firewallは、Corporate Serverに利用可能なすべてのアドオンモジュールをバンドルし、Active Directory、eDirectory、LDAP認証、外部接続の負荷分散による最大20個のネットワークインターフェイスの使用機能など、さらなる機能を追加することで、企業市場を直接的にターゲットとしていました。
2007年4月、同社は市販のIntel Core 2 Duo 1U 19インチラックマウントシャーシをベースにしたSmoothGuard UTM-1000 [ 21 ]ハードウェアアプライアンスをリリースした。UTM-1000にはSmoothwall Advanced Firewallのバリアントがプリインストールされていた。
