ケンブリッジの町には、同じくケンブリッジと呼ばれる村の一部が含まれている。
かつてニューヨーク州オールバニー郡に属していたケンブリッジの町は、アメリカ独立戦争でアメリカ合衆国が独立を達成した直後の1791年にワシントン郡に移管された。
同名の村は1866年に町に編入され、ケンブリッジホテルがあった。地元の言い伝えによると、ホテルで働いていた誰かがパイ・ア・ラ・モードとして知られるデザートを考案したという。[ 5 ]
米国国勢調査局によると、この町の総面積は36.5 平方マイル（94.5平方キロメートル ）で、そのうち36.4平方マイル（94.2平方キロメートル）が陸地、0.1平方マイル（0.3平方キロメートル）（0.33%）が水域である。
町の南側の境界線の一部は、レンセラー郡との境界となっている。
ニューヨーク州道372号線は、町の北東境界線に沿って走っている。
2000年の国勢調査[ 3 ]によると、町には2,152人、795世帯、581家族が居住していた。人口密度は1平方マイルあたり59.2人（ 1平方キロメートルあたり22.9人）であった。住宅数は868戸で、平均密度は1平方マイルあたり23.9戸（ 1平方キロメートルあたり9.2戸）であった。町の人種構成は、白人が97.44% 、黒人またはアフリカ系アメリカ人が0.84%、ネイティブアメリカンが0.37% 、アジア人が0.28% 、太平洋諸島民が0.05% 、その他の人種が0.42% 、2つ以上の人種が0.60%であった。ヒスパニックまたはラテン系は、人種を問わず人口の1.07%であった。

The median income for a household in the town was $46,579, and the median income for a family was $50,714. Males had a median income of $32,165 versus $27,667 for females. The per capita income for the town was $21,529. About 3.0% of families and 5.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 7.5% of those age 65 or over.
The oldest school in Cambridge is Cambridge Central School, rebuilt in 1950 after a devastating fire. It was the site of the Norman Rockwell painting The Young Lady with the Shiner, also known as Triumph in Defeat and Outside the Principal's Office, which appeared on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post on May 23, 1953. The Cambridge Central School District is a public school district located in Cambridge. It has approximately 900 students in grades PK-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 12 to 1. The average teacher salary is $63,933. 56% of the student body is male, 44% is female. According to state test scores, 50% of students are at least proficient in math and 49% in reading.[8] Seven AP courses are currently offered. Cambridge also offers a BOCES program.[9]
Cambridge's varsity football team held the Class D State Champion title two years in a row, winning in 2016 and 2017. They previously won this title in 1992 and in 1999.[10]
The school also runs an archaeological project excavating the settlement of Daniel Shays that has been ongoing since 2013.[11]
