NeuConnect is a high-voltage direct current submarine power cable under construction since 2023 between the Isle of Grain, England and Wilhelmshaven Germany, expected to operate in 2028.[2][3][4][5] It will be the first interconnector between the UK and Germany. The cost of £2.4 billion (€2.8 billion) is financed by Meridiam from France, Allianz Capital Partners from Germany, Kansai Electric Power Company from Japan, and Tokyo Electric Power Company from Japan. The Chair of NeuConnect is Julia Prescot CBE.
The main construction phase started in 2023.[6][7]As of June 2023, operation was expected to start in 2028.[6][7] On 21 May 2024, Gregory Hands and Robert Habeck made a symbolic groundbreaking in Germany.[8]As of November 2024, subsea cabling works had started in UK waters.[9]
The cable will run between a new substation[10] on the Isle of Grain, in Kent in England to the Fedderwarden substation in Wilhelmshaven in the Lower Saxony region of Germany.[3][4] Landfall will be next to Grain Coastal Park, in Kent, and at Hooksiel, near Wilhelmshaven in Germany.[10]
At 725 km in length, the interconnector will be one of the longest worldwide.[11]
As of 2022 the project was expected to cost £2.4 billion (€2.8 billion). The project is expected to deliver £1.7 billion in consumer benefits to UK consumers over 25 years, and could deliver a net reduction in carbon emissions of over 13 Mt CO2 in the same time.[11]

マシュー・ブレット、アンドリュー・ニューベリー、ローン・ギフォードは、NeuConnectプロジェクトを発案し最初に開発したGreenage Power Limitedの創設者である。[ 15 ] NeuConnectプロジェクトは2015年に構想され、初期段階の開発者は2016年にOfgemに初期プロジェクト評価を申請した。[ 16 ]
歴史的に、両国はすでに北海を経由して他国と相互接続線を結んでいる。純電力輸入国である英国は、フランス、アイルランド、オランダと相互接続線を結んでおり[ 13 ] 、 2021年には ノルウェーの水力発電所とドイツの風力発電所を結ぶNordLinkが開通した。NeuConnectは英国とドイツを結ぶ初の直接相互接続線となる[ 17 ] 。
Neuconnect Britain Ltd. は、Ofgem がプロジェクトを原則的に承認した後、 2018 年に設立されました[ 11 ] 。2019年 7 月に公開協議イベントが開催されました[ 18 ]。2019 年 12 月に、計画申請がMedway Council に提出され[ 18 ]、入札の招待が開始されました[ 18 ] [ 19 ] 。2020 年 1 月に、ドイツ連邦ネットワーク庁 (BNetzA) は、2019 ～ 2030 年のグリッド開発計画で NeuConnect インターコネクター プロジェクトを確認しました[ 18 ] 。2020 年 4 月に、NeuConnect は、グレイン島のGrain Power StationとBritNed 付近で現地調査作業を完了しました[ 20 ] 。2022 年 2 月に 12 億ユーロの ケーブル契約が締結され[ 21 ] [ 22 ]、4 月に変電所契約が締結されました[ 23 ] [ 22 ] 。
2022 年 7 月、プロジェクトは資金調達が完了し、2022 年後半に初期建設工事が開始されました。[ 11 ] 2022 年 8 月、東京電力は FI1 Limited (Greenage Power の関連会社) の買収を通じてプロジェクトの 6.5% の権益を取得すると発表しました。[ 24 ] 2022 年 10 月、ケーブルメーカーのPrysmian が725 km のケーブルの生産を開始しました。[ 25 ] 2022 年 12 月、ヴィルヘルムスハーフェンとグレイン島で初期建設工事が開始され、[ 26 ]ケーブルの製造が開始されました。[ 25 ] 2024 年 11 月、英国海域で海底ケーブル工事が開始されました。[ 27 ] プロジェクトは 2028 年までに稼働開始する予定です。[ 28 ]
