スコットランドチェス チャンピオンシップは、以前はスコットランド チェス協会であったチェス スコットランドによって運営されています。1884 年から開催されており、現在は 2 週間の週末とその間の 1 週間にわたって 9 ラウンドのトーナメントが行われます。最初の 7 日間は、グレーディング制限セクションやシニア チャンピオンシップなどの補助トーナメントが行われ、2 週目の週末には週末大会が開催されます。
もともと、この選手権は招待制で、スコットランド代表として国際試合に出場する資格のある選手だけが優勝できましたが、タイトル獲得の可能性を高めるために、他国籍のタイトル獲得選手が招待されることもありました。
2008 年、チャンピオンシップは国際オープンに置き換えられました。スコットランドチャンピオンは、スコットランドの最高成績を収めたプレーヤーによって決定されます。2009 年にエディンバラで開催されたトーナメントには、9 人のグランドマスターが参加しました。2010 年のイベントはハミルトンで開催され、2011 年のイベントはエディンバラに戻りました。2014 年のチャンピオンシップは、グラスゴーで開催されたコモンウェルス チェス チャンピオンシップに組み込まれました。2015 年にイベントはエディンバラで開催され、2016 年のイベントはグラスゴーに戻ります。
現在のトーナメント審判員は、IA Alex McFarlane と IA Andy Howie です。
注目の受賞者
最近の著名な優勝者には、スコットランド選手権で優勝した初の女性プレーヤーである2003年のケテヴァン・アラカミア・グラント、1999年にスコットランド人プレーヤーとして初めて地元でグランドマスターのタイトルを獲得し、2004年にはスコットランドとイギリスのダブル優勝を果たしたジョナサン・ロウソンなどがいます。2013年には、ロディ・マッケイが1974年に初タイトルを獲得してから約39年後にタイトルを獲得しました。2018年には、ムラド・アブドゥラが最年少のダブル優勝者となりました。
